Looking at a couple of Mavic tops, but have been advised that the size chart is a little skewed.

The chart is recommending a Large for me (38-40" chest) but I've been told I should go for the same Euro/UK size I'd normally buy, which is Medium.

Any further advice I should be heeding?

There's normally a couple of sizes in the label, Euro Large is listed as UK Medium, that would be labelled on the packet and everything else as a Large, so you need to go up one.

Yes its a shite system and caused no end of problems

It's on the skinny side. That said, my winter top is Mavic and I love it. Good quality and very comfy.
I'd try and buy it from a shop so you can try out sizes first. I spent 20 mins swapping between the large and the medium before deciding on medium. usually a 40 inch chest

I'm XL/XXL in Rapha and XXL or XXXL in santini or sportful road but XL in Mavic road and mtb so i think it sizes normally, so if you go medium normally i'd try that first and no i'm not a fatty just big

as others have said the UK size on the label is the one to note! not that complex
