Whats the difference between 521 and 321 rims and which is stronger?
dunno but my 321 are strong as a strong thing and cheap ๐
521s are welded, 321s are pinned. And the 521s are lighter. I reckon they're probably stronger too.
[s]321 is wider and heavier, and designed to be stronger.
521 is narrower- but some prefer the tyre profile it gives, lighter and still pretty dam tough[/s]
Take it your talking about the EN series, not the D series!
Mavic reckon both the 321 and 521 are 28mm wide...

Spot on

Same width mate... The "21" in both their names refers to their internal cavity width of 21mm. Which equates to approx 28mm external width.
Trust me, I know what I'm talking about.. just in a time warp!
mine say xm321 if thats any difference
Mavic rim names:
EN/XM/XC - enduro/freeride, cross-mountain, cross-country
First digit:
1 - entry level
3 - budget
5 - mid-range
7 - top of the range
8 - UST
Last two digits: internal width (mm)
So the 521 are a slightly higher quality than the 321. The 521 are about 30g lighter too.
Strength is all down to wheel-build quality, but the 521 should be stronger I think.
strength isn't all down to wheelbuild quality tho is it?
try racing DH on DT rims if you don't believe me.
Got EN521's handbuilt on Hope Pro II hubs. Couldn't ask for anything better. Still true after some big crunches and rock scrapes, including some very solid water bar/rear wheel interface activity
I have the older D521 CDs on Hope bulbs 10 years old now thousands of miles and lots of hard landings. As far as I can tell they are unbreakable.
I've just measured a XM321, its 28mm - D521 is 36mm.
