Mental. On the pinkbike interview he said the compression of hitting the loop meant some serious G's and loss of control. Surely someone might have sussed that out.

In the vid I think I hear him say they underestimated it and didn't know what they were getting in to.

6-7g's of compression (plus 1g bodyweight) on entry to the loop according to the back of my envelope

They could have at least tested it in miniature first with a hot wheels track .

He was very lucky 😯 to escape with "only" 10 fractures in his wrist and 3 fractures in his ankle.

Matt Hoffman and Tony Hawk did something similar in 2007 (on a smaller scale). No maths, just balls (Matt) and skill (Tony).
