[Closed] Marzocchi Marathon Race drop-out paint is flaking off: lacquering technique?

My 2005 Marzocchi Marathon Race fork has some paint issues at the drop-outs, i.e. it's flaking off. The lowers are magnesium, which should not be left unpainted as I understand it, so I'm wondering what's the best approach to protect them?

1) Paint (the existing paint is the white pearlescent one which I'm very unlikely to find a match for)
2) Lacquer, using clear nail varnish for example

If the latter, will a thin coating of lacquer left to dry, then the same again be sufficient? Thanks....
