[Closed] Marzocchi ETA Cartridge leg minimum oil level?

[#2780465]

Just fiddling with my 2006 Marzocchi MX Pro ETA & TAS fork setup.

Regarding oil levels on the ETA cartridge side, does the top of the cartridge body have to be covered? If I go lower than this, cycling the cartridge piston rod doesn’t sound too good (metal to metal contact, although that could just be the oil making an excellent suppressor). ETA works perfectly BTW.

Before anyone suggests it, Marzocchi‘s 135ml per leg spec is useless if you are doing a quick oil change as some of the old is impossible to drain from the legs without a full strip-down, so I'm using the old height spec of 45-55mm from top of stanchion.

This is some info I grabbed back in 2004 about oil change on MX Pro's, probably from posts on here (well old here)..

50mm gap from the crown of the fork leg down to the oil, with the fork leg compressed.
7.5 weigth oil (shell is recommended)

First, I would check that the fork is capable of full travel by releasing all the air, it should yield all the travel up, in which case, it's just a question of finding the right air pressure.

Secondly, I had put the same question to Windwave after not finding an answer here. Initially when I asked, the chap said 50mm ( Windwave: There should be a 60mm gap when the fork is compressed between the oil and the top of the stanchion) in both legs (105mm travel 2003 MX pro ETA) but when I pointed out to him that you couldn't do that on the ETA side he agreed and advised 100cc of oil. I had found that trying to undo the top cap on the ETA side didn't work, I had to undo the bolt at the bottom of the ETA leg to release the ETA cartridge, this also releases all the oil as well. To refill, do the air side first to the correct height, then install the ETA cartridge via the top cap, invert the fork and fill the required volume of oil in the bottom of the fork - a tad fiddle, compress the end of the ETA rod with your finger to let the oil in - then tighten the foot nut. Not enough oil & ETA won't work, a little too much and it probably won't matter.

Hope it makes some sort of sense and works for you as it did me!

So from that, I assume you can undo the lower bolt on the ETA and drain out all the oil, do it back up and fill it back up with the 100cc of oil?

lots of links to manual here may help, though the main Marz archive ( http://manualer.happymtb.org/marzocchi/ know seems to be dead)

z1ppy, thanks, and in no particular order:

I have all the manuals (just about every Italian MX year), not much help TBH (the manuals that is, not you).

With no air I don't get full travel, but then I have a spring on the ETA side. With no air and no spring I very nearly get full travel.

My ETA side top cap can be separated from the cartridge pumping rod so no need to undo the foot nut thankfully. Again though, unless doing a full strip down, hard to be sure ALL the old oil is drained out, and therefore adding 100ml may well be too much. Still, it's a benchmark I can use for future reference and experimentation.
