got some bomber ata 55 forks, they are shyte, but i cant afford any new ones for now.
so, they are very stiff and hard to get desired amount of travel.
i let all the air out, and this helped a lot, but i cant stop them topping out with a bit of a thud.
adjusted the rebound all the way back, but it has not cured it.
do i need some air in them or can i run em without air?
Edit: actually Ton, I've re-read your post and the problem I have is not 'stiff to operate' it almost exactly the opposite; very active if the sag is set correctly but blows through the travel when you hit something or dives badly when you brake. You might want to ignore below!
Ton,
I have recently bought a pair of the ATA2 version, full in the knowledge that they suffer from this problem.
Try here for a simple-but-technological fix: http://forums.mtbr.com/shocks-suspension/marzocchi-55-tst2-conversion-shim-damping-step-step-410874.html
To be fair, I used them for the first time in anger last night, and despite having air pressure that results in almost no sag, I found them to be a very nice ride when actually on the trail. They don't do too well on the ride-it-round-outside-and-off-a-few-kerbs test.
I have shims heading my way and am going to try the above mod.

For what it is worth I bought some of these. Bought from a LBS as a desperate attempt to replace some broken lyriks before missing out on the Devils Staircase and Cieran Path a couple of weekends ago. I had exactly the same issues and these were brand new out of the box. If I had any air in them they essentially locked out and had no sensitivity on the trail, they make a clunking noise when they top out and the ATA winds down of its own accord. To be honest, even with no air in them they are still take too much to get them moving and I'm not that light at about 105kg+ when kitted up. Terrible.
Mine are going back to the shop. I know that doesn't help you fix them but just to say this is certainly not an isolated case of naffness. Through reading about I hear they can be converted to coil?
