Hello
Looking for some opinions on the Marin Wolfridge (2004 / 2004?). I am being offered one of these (no real off road use)for £400. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience riding one. This would be my first full sus bike so I have nothing to compare against, but like the idea of something different without having to pay new bike prices. Test riding it this week.
Thanks
I had one (2002 I think). it was the old single pivot design though, I can't say I liked it much. too much bob. the 04 may be different.
Yeah, I had 04 Rock Springs as my first full sus which I'm pretty sure was the same frame. I only had 6 weeks or so before it got nicked (from lock up at work) 2 years ago but it was really good. Didn't notice any bob problem but recall rear shock had ProPedal. Sure it was not single pivot though. Liked the idea of the 3 way travel selection but always had it set to full travel in in that short Yorkshire winter experience. Got an 07 Rock Springs with new TARA sus on the basis of that experience. BB was not good; much better after went to Hope HT2. Story from LBS was that Marin had found a load of 04 models in a warehouse in 2007 so there were quite a few at a good price then: ~ £1k. Good luck.
I had one, about that year too - very good bike, didn't notice too much bob, very capable on proper (Welsh) terrain, reliable and pretty strong, for that price it's a steal....
I had the 04 Rock Springs as first modern mountain bike after starting again.
I followed it with an 06 Wolf Ridge and now ride a Cotic Hemlock.
My rides have got lower and slacker as my riding has progressed or my riding has progressed as i my bikes got lower and slacker?
Point is that the BB height on the 04 Marins is very high but unless you like steep, techy trails then i don't think you'll care.
Sounds like a snip if its in good nick.
mine also had a pretty poor rockshox rear shock too.
I've still got a 1999 Attack Trail (next one up from Wolf Ridge)
Also had a 2004 XC100 and a 2006 Mt Vision Pro.
Would definately recomend Marins. Service/warrenty etc is excellent (lifetime supply of bearings even applies to you as second owner) Only had three sets in my '99 one so far.
Can vouch for the lifetime bearing warranty, IIRC the 04 versions may have had a lifetime frame warranty as well - my 04 Mount Vision certainly has. If the present owner has all the paperwork make sure you get hold of it & if you ever need the warranty you're sorted.
My brother has an 04 Attack Trail, if its an 04 it'll have the Quad link suspension & the 4/5/6 travel QR, as above the previous years were single pivot. It does have a high BB so it got a lot if stick for have a ride 'on' not 'in' feel, whilst being very tall. They release a modified linkage for them called the Whyte Alpine Link which lowered the BB & slackened the headangle. My brothers has this & it feels a lot better for it. My main criticism of it is that I feel the TT is too short, but it rides well & he's still happy with it.
Thanks for the advice, will let you know how I get on
