I use the talky toaster maps, it works fine - you just have to upload the maps for the area you are travelling to before you go.

Openmtbmap.org

Openstreetmap is a project to collect mapping data. Openmtbmap, talkietoaster and even the new Garmin cycling maps are just ways of displaying that data for a particular use

The easiest way for me is to use Garmin basecamp then use openmtbmap to install the maps into that. The you use basecamp to install the maps into your gps

Have a look at openmtbmap_great-britain I downloaded it a while ago and never got round to installing on my 820, but looking at it on Garmin Basecamp it looks pretty detailed for the Quantocks.
Did you get up there this afternoon BTW?
I spent the afternoon at the mother in laws in North Devon. ๐Ÿ™

I like this website for Garmin maps: http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/
You can pick just the tiles you want, then it will give you a file to copy onto the Garmin.
Or you can install the maps in BaseCamp, then transfer from there.

I've just got back from a quick spin on the CX bike in the wet and dark (I wasted all the good weather doing house stuff). Looks like it's going to be nice and sunny tomorrow.

I'm not sure what you mean by mount the images here. I sounds like you might be double clicking on the .img files. Normally all you do is copy them to the Garmin folder on your device BUT I would always back up any .img files in that folder first. In any case I would recommend using basecamp and using the install program fron openvttmap as that gives you control over what you send to you device and basecamp is nice for planning routes

Oops, too slow from me. Basecamp won't directly read img files. You need to use the install programs from openvtt map and others instead. If you just want to use use the .img files then drop them into the Garmin folder

Nope, im pretty sure the folder on the device is labelled 'garmin'. There will be at least obe .img file there already. Back it up first

edit: just checked, it's a folder named 'Garmin'

edit2: Look here and scroll down to the edge520 specific instructions
