Have just moved to Manchester and am looking for a goup of people to get out on rides with pref guys with local knowlege as know nothing of the routes in the area. Am Bit of an old Fart (36) and not exactly race fit at the mo so looking for people who are up for a laugh rather than super fit race whippets. or even if any one knows of any good routes in the area close enough to the city to do in an evening!

Cheers

Sam - unfit, old fart, you'll fit right in with the Southmanchestermassive.
Social rides are the name of the game, always finishing with a visit to the nearest pub. ๐Ÿ™‚

Correct about SMM - often ride Thurs nights, but tonight they have ridden to the Oktoberfest thingy in the city centre.

I also ride with the Bogtrotters southern contingent on Wed nights, we often ride Rivington Brinscal, Darwen Tower, Longridge, Burnley, Worsthorne etc (all less than an hour from mcr).

The southern rides arent listed on the website but you can use any of the contact names to get the details or get on the mailing list.

or us too. twistedwheels.myfreeforum.org

Mainly south manchester based, but we tend to hit anywhere within easy striking distance of mcr for night rides.

btw, you can easily hit the Dark Peak, Calderdale, S Pennines, Saddleworth, Rivington from here for night rides. It's a good place to be based so long as no one nicks yer bike....

Manchester's a big place, most of the groups mentioned above are south manchester. There's also Stockport CLarion on Wednesday's and JOn @ Bcycle Smithy in Hazel Grove runs a regular monday night ride, although the lovely Mrs Bicycle Smithy is due to deliver Baby Bicyle Smithy round about now so that may be on hold for a while.

Ask Terrahawk / Harry The Spider about north manchester rides if that's closer to you, or Lowey does regulat rides round Rivington if you're able to get even further north

Are you the guys who used to be the Flying Doctors before there were no Flying Doctors?

Indeed we are. We switched to something less formal about 4-5 years ago, some of the old Flying Doctors peeps still ride though.

Ah okay, you riding much in the Peak? I'm a mate of Rich's, who works at the Bicycle Doc, bumped into a couple of you guys on Rushup Edge a few months back. Our group has gone into a state of advanced disintegration, so I'm kind of looking for alternatives for occasional rides. I'll have to have a look at your forum ๐Ÿ™‚

To be honest, most of the rides a lot of Manchester riders do aren't focused on location per se, cos we all have to drive to get to the really good stuff. We have people from Sheffield and the Peaks for eg, and I'm sure the other groups mentioned do too?

Yeah we primarily ride the peak, but also a fair bit round Diggle, Saddleworth etc. No problemo mate, pile in whenever you want.

I will be doing night rides soon- buying some DX lights and soon it'll be the only time I'll be able to get out when the new and improved hora arrives... ๐Ÿ™‚

Very wise move hora, easiest way to get in a regular ride without disrupting the family stuff imho.

Worth nailing the myth that thing's are tougher in the dark tho. Most difficult terrain is actually easier at night - you can only focus on where your beam of light goes and all that peripheral stuff like "zoikes I can't ride that?" doesn't tend to occur!

It's just the ghosts and zombies you've got to watch out for.

I rode the ice cream run for the first time in the dark. I then rode it in daylight and questioned my own sanity

manchester mountain bikers aren't limited to just peaks-based midweek rides though, in fact i think they might die off a little now the nights are shorter & colder. we also have regular riding around north manchester (usually weds nights) and stockport & marple way (tues & thursdays).

mark from stockport clarion knows loads of routes out of stockport too & their weds night ride is always a great crack!

Steve - We need part 2 of the kebab ride mate. Where do you think?

Hora - You omitted to mention your gimp mask. That was restricting your vision too

See, it's auto suggestion - the word kebab has powers on us both. Let's do it. Gotta factor in Turkish Delight of course.

Dennis was chuffed to bits when I told him he was famous on the internet btw. I think we might get more next time, so we could mebe tap him up and see if we could use the restaurant to sit in? Whaddaya think?

Shall we work out a plan again offline and set it up on here?
