Evening all! Thinking of getting a MM for the front of my mega and HD for the rear both in super gravity carcass. Adds up to 2060g total tyre weight.
Anyone run this combination and find it too weighty?
I always run a super gravity in the rear and snakeskin front, never had any problems with this, snakeskin on the rear I struggle with pinch flats in the rough rocky courses, stiniog etc.
Ive had the SG carcass on front and rear (various combos of hd's, mm's) for 2 years now for everything from xc, everyday trail riding to uplifts. There is a weight penalty but i keep up with my mates on the climbs and have had zero punctures, ripped side walls etc
Thanks all. They will be used mainly for abroad riding and uplifts.
SG is a tough carcass. Even the lighter version is pretty durable. I don't think either is a particularily good tyre mind but the SG is good for what you describe.
Thanks Northwind. You helped me out a few weeks back when I was considering barons and as you can see I'm still deliberating. Can you suggest an alternate combination? TBH I'm not a fan of schwalbe but everyone seems to rate the MM
Honestly, not sure, I'm a lightweight so I don't use the heavier carcasses so much- I've not used the heavier carcass Shorty but it ought to outmatch the Magic Mary if the Exo is anything to go by. On the back, DHR, Butcher SX?
Hans Dampf is decent enough but cloggy, so I reckon if you want the spikyness of the Mary up front it's going to be a bit out of its depth. A lot of the time I found it had less grip than much faster tyres just because it was so blocked. Near miss, imo it just had the good fortune to be the first half-decent harder use 650b tyre so picked up lots of word of mouth. If it'd come out today I reckon it'd be ignored.
I considered the shorty but it doesn't seem so much as an all rounder as the MM not that I'm totally convinced that an all rounder actually exists.
I run this combo and yes they are a tad heavy but I like and trust/know the tyres so accept it.
Tyres are a personal thing, the only way is to try them.
You could check out WTBs offering ( WTB Vigilante on the front and WTB Wolverine rear) but I think you'll find all meaty tyres aren't on the light side.
Shorty is the better of the two at that imo- faster, better on hardpack and off. I think I agree about allrounders, specialisation is just better for us I reckon... But then I'm obviously a tyre nerd, normal people might not agree. But on a big bike there's nothing the Shorty won't do at least reasonably well. Mine will be coming off when things dry up a bit but it could do the job.
Honestly I reckon the Shorty just makes the Mary completely irrelevant. Not that it's bad at all, it's just not as good at anything. This is quite a good read, it's more mud focused but there's a good compare of the 2.

Very pleased with my Hans Dampf SG tyres (26"). So easy to fit tubeless with 'normal' rims and Stans no-tube rim strip - didn't even use soap or water.
They're all-round tyres, so someone's always going to point out a negative with them. Are there any better all round tyres out there ? I'm not sure.
I'm running PaceStar at the back and VertStar at the front. I reckon the front will wear out quicker than the back though ๐
How does the Shorty size up compared to the MM?
