Time is coming to replace my DHF 2.5 and DHR2 2.4 set up. Running the WT 2.5 on the front and a Double Down at the back.
Was thinking the Magic Mary looked like a good alternative at the front but maybe asa on the back? Seems like most people go with a Hans Damph or Rock Razor on the back if using Schwalbe though - any reason to avoid the Mary?
I go with Nobby Nic in a harder compound as the MM was a bit wide for the rear end of first bike I put them on.
No reason not to go MM both ends, it worked fine apart from buzzing the front mech when cornering/putting the power down.
MM on the back is hard going on the climbs if your doing any. I ran it last winter in the slop. It's not impossible if you've got the fitness for big days out.
I've now changed to a MM on the front and a DHRii on the back which is much more climb friendly and rolls quicker.
Agree with aldo, you'd be dropping anchor with that on the back. Depends on what you like to ride, if you're focussed on the downs and just winch up chatting to your mates then it's fine. But any sort of mixed riding involving mileage it would suck IMHO.
My 150/150 mm all mountain bike:
2.6 inch rubber front and rear, both Magic Mary 2.6 addix soft, both around 20 psi
perfect grip. perfect braking.
The "drag" I only feel when biking on forest roads. In the trail everything is perfect. Downhill these tyres are great. Think in regard of punctures the Magic Mary is not the best.
Other combination:
Friend of mine uses now Magic Mary addix ULTRA soft front and Hans Dampf addix SPEEDGRIP rear. Both 2.3 inch.
I run MM front and rear on my spesh enduro. Super gravity on the back, normal snakeskin on the front. Yes its a little but more draggy, but the braking traction is so so so good, last week i swapped to a rock razor and found the lack of braking annoying for steeper and faster trails so have swapped back.
I am tempted to try the new Hans Dampf on the back when it is released.
MM front and rear is a noticeable amount of drag, I usually run DHF & DHR as a slightly faster pair for all-season use. I break out the MM pair for when I'm racing on something steep and nasty.
I ran MM front and rear on a 26er at QECP over the winter a couple of years ago. Awesome levels of grip. Not so good on the man made tracks at the FoD; the spikes would fold over making cornering unpredictable.
Magic Mary front and year is good for me (I really could not care less about drag though, so take my opinion with a pinch of salt). Also depends where you are riding I think I would go for something a bit less blocky if I has riding more trail centre hardpack stuff.
MM are great when new but wear out quick and become not so great.

I'd ย say literally the opposite to that. My MM has worn the slowest of any I've had and I find it just as good as when I got it.
