I've a Maddux RD30 road rear wheel that needs it's bearings replacing but I can't work out how to remove the freehub. I've tried Allen keys but none fit properly, it's like I need a proprietary tool but can't find anything online nor and other info on the hubs online. I've emailed the Maddux but they've not replied

Does anyone know what exactly I need to remove the freehub?

A post on reddit about your hub says 15mm hex key but need to remove a bearing to get access.

Update. I realized that there was two indents on the other side and after a google there is a freehub removal tool that fits into these two indents/slots, and you can remove thos nut (it has a reverse thread so needed to be unscrewed clockwise).

The freehub then slides off and scatteres it's many timy bearings across the floor, bugger!

What a weird looking freehub, the pawls are actually still on the hub body and the freehub slides over the top.

The bearings are knackered and the bearings racing is pitted and, the pawls looked corroded. Spares seem almost impossible to find..... Double bugger!

I think this hub is FUBAR so a replacement is required, as these are a fourth* set of wheels for my bike, only for some road training, I'll be looking for something second hand but in good condition and very cheap. I hope this will be useful for someone..... Maybe not 😄

* Yes, 4 sets of wheels as I only have the one curly barred bile, with limited bike storage and am a wheel hoarder, I'm quite hard on wheels too, I've broken three sets of wheels on my cx / gravel bike in the last 6 years, all cheap sets as I was piss-poor each time my wheels decided to self-destruct.

  1. Bontrager something something, that are very heavy (circa 2,200g!) bought second hand - but never used - about 2 years ago. Changed the bearings once, look pretty beaten up now but are my go-to wheels for gravel riding. These are shod with my favourite gravel tyres Continental Terra Trail. Bought for £60, wheelset.
  2. Maddux wheelset mentioned above, bought second hand complete with cassette and tyres from much cheapness. Used for the occasional indoor roller session or road cycle. The tyres are some Continental road tyres, god knows the name. Bought for £40, complete with tyres and cassette.
  3. Some hand built tubular wheels shod with Challenge Limus mud tyres for.cx racing, bought second hand complete with tyres. Bought for £150 complete with tyres and cassette.
  4. New shiny Hunt Gravel Race alloy wheelset, bought for my trip to France this.year.and are listed as 1,400g so a sizable upgrade over my usual anchor-like wheels. These have Schwalbe Overlanders fitted. Bought for £270 in the sale.

Apologies if TMI
