Anyone got one of these? I know I can get a better specced windows machine and the MacBook is expensive but after many years of using them I fancy a change.

Will only be used for surfing and photo editing in Elements.

They just seem slightly dated with the Duo processor rather than an I3 / I5 and screen resolution doesnt seem that high.

One thing I do like is the reported 10sec boot up time or is that rubbish?

for what you're looking to do I'd go for the plain old macbook - it wo'nt fall over doing the stuff you're going to ask of it and you can put what you save towards a good peripheral i.e. airport express/apple TV to wirelessly stream music thorugh your hifi.

My two penneth

edit

by the way, lovely things to use. well worth the cash if you've got it.

Ive had one for 2 weeks and its very good, the battery life is superb, which is why i bought it. Gives you the power when you need it unlike many ultra low voltage PC laptops. They are £890 at costco at the moment inc VAT.

My wife had one for 1 week. She liked it but the HDD died after a week so swapped it for a laptop.

The ones I've seen are more like 15-20, not that it makes too much difference really.

What I would suggest though is simply closing the lid down to sleep it when not in use. It resumes in about a second, and saves tonnes of time as you don't have to open all your apps, folders etc again.

All sounds good at the moment then -my laptop takes about 5minds to boot up with all the little extras, anti-virus etc.

What would a 13" screen be like for editing photos, I know its small but is it too small?

Go to an apple store and have a play with one is my best suggestion you'll soon see how good they are.

Ditto retro, shutting down computers is so 2002. I think I reboot about once a month, usually only if a software update requires it.

If you're serious about the pics, about £150 would get you a cheap 1920x1080 panel in about 22-23 (or an ok 24" with some shopping about)

Now thats something I hadn't thought of - good idea 🙂

Are they ok to carry about when in 'sleep' mode - ar there no problems in it getting jarred with power going through it?

Fine to carry about in sleep mode. All they do is keep power to the ram. If they loose power it will restore from a hibernation image on the HD.

You should get a few days in sleep off battery at least. I got that on my older MBP with far worse batter than the new ones.

About a year ago I purchased my first Mac (MacBook Pro) after years of using a PC laptop and I love it.

For "productivity" I can't fault it, I use iWork and iLife and for my needs I find them better than the M$ equivalents.

I am never left feeling I wish it was faster unlike pretty much every PC laptop I've used.

I'm not some Mac fanboy I still use a Quad core Desktop PC for intensive applications but for everything else the MBP is my first choice.

I bought a refurbished one about 2 years ago direct from Apple. Perfect condition, like new and still going strong.

Selection changes daily but there are some bargains to be had.

find a student and then get them to buy it for you. i got my macbook unibody for 720 and i think the standard MBP comes to 850 with the discount.

I have had a macbook Pro 13 for about a year and its awesome. I never reboot, just shut the lid and then reopen when you need and boom its there an ready. I use VMWare fusion if i ever need a windows specific app, and use the MBP with an output to my 40" samsung TV to watch HD movies etc. Cant be beat 🙂

How on earth do you get a macbook pro to boot in 15 sec?! is that with ssd hard drive? I have a 13 inch MacBook pro with 4Gb ram and snow leopard. From pressing the on switch, it's more like 30-40 sec to get to desktop. That is with nothing set to boot automatically too. But i only close the lid, a full restart once a week maybe.

I'd say my Macbook Pro is about 25 seconds to desktop including opening a few apps. More RAM helps but 10 secs is impressive if true.

Guy at work has his kitted out with SSD HD - seriously quick to boot but £££. I have considered a small HD in the card slot but can't really justify the expense...
