i have some of said shoes and the ratchet only fastens so far then just clicks and doesn't tighten up, they haven't be used that much though, 5-10 rides?

Sounds like a plastic notch is mangled. Or you are tightening them as far as they'll go? The strip is replaceable (I think).

I've never had any issues with Shimano ratchets - always 100% reliable.

strap seems ok its the ratchet that won't grip, only one of them which is annoying, it tightens up most of the way its just the 'nipping up' part
