Hi,Can anyone out there help. My question is in two parts.
1)I am keen to go for a hub gear (Hardtail 29er)for this coming season and I'm torn between the Rohloff and Alfine 11. I race a few XC,s and a few more Marathon and 12hr & 24hr events as a pair or team of four. Other than that I intend to train on the bike over the hills in Wales and Shropshire, (all year round).
I've read one or two blogs and understand that there has been some issues with the Alfine 11, on the other hand the Rohloff would max my budget for the rest of the build. I'd be interested what real experiences anyone out there may have of either system used on MTB's and what your recommendations are.
2)I quite like the Lynskey,Ridgeline Ti 29er. and looking at the pictures on the web of this frame I wonder if there are any issues with gear cable routeing for ether the Rohloff or Alfine. I know that I could just put a cable tie around the gear cable and frame tube. But having spent £1300. on a frame I would hope to find a neater solution and utilise the existing bosses as much as possible. Has anyone had a problem with cable routeing and overcome them in a neat way, Cheers GO.
This is the only picture I can find of mine at the moment. 😀
There's no tidy way of routing the cables without proper clips. I just cable tied mine on. It does seem odd that Lynskey provide a Rohloff specific dropout, then leave you to bodge the cables on any way you can.
I've used mine for commuting, trailquesting and 12 & 24 hour solos, either SS or Rohloff.
I've still got the Lynskey as a back up bike, but I've got a custom built Qoroz now with proper cable guides as my main bike.
Edit to add another picture;
You could get Burls to build you something to your spec? Really helpful guy and good value for money.
I cracked my Lynskey frame at 11 months old. Mine came back from repair with the newer, thicker walled seat tube as used on the current frames.
Even so, I think if I was after a titanium Rohloff 29er, I'd go for something that looked like the designer had thought about how the finished product was going to look.
I went for custom build because I wanted belt drive and a Lefty.
Qoroz and Burls are two options. there are others as well who will weld on cable guides where they are needed.
As for racing a Rohloff, I think the most I've ever seen in an event was four, including mine, at one of the Merida Marathons and two of those were being ridden by SJS staff.
I've also seen four, out of about 2500 bikes, at Mountain Mayhem.
I'm pretty sure there were quite a few Rohloffs at the StrathPuffer 24 hour.
It may max out your build cost but you won't be replacing gear train components after a few muddy races.
I always wonder with threads like this, where someone's asked some specific questions, got a couple of answers, then not come back, what happened ?
Hi soz, Graham I did read it at the time, Just forgot to send a reply. Soz Again and Thanks for the advice. Graham
