[#12032868]

Left the rear axle on the pavement, been back to check but can't find it. Oh well.

It's for a 2017 transition scout. Syntace x-12 142mm.

I've googled it but it brings up loads of options and there's various cheap brand X options, but I don't know what the porch of the thread is for a start,!

Can I get away with one of the cheaper ones? Or is it full price x-12 only?

X-12 is just a standard and size, so a 142mmm X-12 should work no matter the brand, 12 is just the diameter, think it's a pretty standard thread and pitch anyway, i've got the same on mine, i know wolf tooth, DT, etc all do them.

X12 is an easy replace. I think dtswiss make one that fits and brand x almost certainly do. I'd be surprised if the brand x doesn't say x12. If you need the thread sizes then the syntace has the details.

I think I need thread pitch 1.0 but the brand X ones appear to be 1.5. looks like Dt Swiss have one available at £30. Also seen Newmen one at Paul's cycles for £22, but that doesn't have the pitch information on it.

Syntace x12 is a prescribed size I think. Unless I’m wrong, for 142mm hubs it’s:

  • 142mm hub axle length - the thru axle length is of course longer possibly - and the head adds a bit again but you ignore that.
  • 15mm threaded length
  • 1.0mm thread pitch
  • Conical washer

The key bit is that syntace will be 1.0mm pitch as I recall.

Robert Axle is your friend of course (if expensive). These are the dimensions they suggest.

https://robertaxleproject.com/product/lightning-bolt-on-axle-rear-12-mm-x-162-167-mm-x-1-0-thread/

To check, measure the out dropout spacing on the outside of the dropouts. This will give you the overall axle length. You need at least that length of axle. But - whatever the threaded length is make sure it won’t foul and jam in the dropout before it tightens.
So overall axle length minus threaded length must be less than outside of non-threaded dropout to inside of threaded dropout.

That gives you, 142mm for the hub spacing, pitch 1.0mm, a minimum overall length and a minimum threaded length given the actual axle that’s available. That’s enough info to buy.

I got a J&L one which was cheap and light but turned out to be a little bit oversized and needed a bit of sanding down to fit. I suspect the finish was just too thick. Anyway, not a strong recommend but it does work, it's cheaper than the Syntace ones, and it's lighter than most.

The conical washer makes the x12 different to most axles, any replacement would have to be specific for the syntace standard

RAP sell conical washers.

Cotic sell the axle https://www.cotic.co.uk/order/spares/item/Syntace_x12_142_axle

Think this Newman one at £21 is also the right part;

I was wondering about this. The one I lost was pointy! A lot of the replacement ones seem to be a flat end do I'm not sure they'll fit for that reason as well.

It looked like this one. https://www.transitionbikes.com/Store_Detail.cfm?C=Replacement%20Parts&SC=Dropouts&P=5286

I could order direct from transition, but it's $50 with shipping from US. There's got to be a better solution!

My 2015 scout cracked and died, the axle has survived! It is non boost so presumably same size as the 2017. Scruffy but functionally fine. Can post it to you or if you are in Sheffield you are welcome to pick up.

Glad it has arrived and fits, see there is a point to keeping all that spare junk, erm, I mean useful parts that just temporarily have no use.
