What goes up must come down. The descent can be very dangerous because of its steepness and length (never mind the wandering livestock!). In order to ensure everyoneโs safety there will be two compulsory stop points where everyone will be expected to stop and put two feet down before carrying on. These will be marked by advance warning signs and a marshal with a red flag. Anyone failing to comply will be disqualified!
Seems to be run by the fun police. No thanks .
Rode up there a few months ago as a diversion on a longer route. Long but not too desperate even for a rubbish climber like me. 48 minutes up: 12 minutes down.
Pick a nice sunny day and just go and ride it. It looks quite narrow so on the dy of the sportive you'll be unlikely to get to the top without having to wait for a gap through bunches of slower riders. If you want to compare times, I'd be very surprised if it's not already a Strava segment.
uphill, road, challenge
Three words together that make me shudder. In fact road is enough, and talk of tarmac makes me feel sick.
Done it a few times on the mtb when riding crossfell
It is a decent challenge on a road bike, but feels a touch pointless once you're up there, 'cos the only choice on a road bike is just to come straight back down again. Can you compare it to Alpe D'Huez? well no. At Alpe D'Huez there's a nice(ish) village with bars to stop at and funny looking church too.
This sportive seems like a box ticking exercise so they can use the tag line of "highest paved road".
Also the road is very thin with no margin for error and I wouldn't fancy trusting some sportive riders barreling down at 40mph as I was going up. I know it technically finishes at the top, but everyone still has to ride back down.
Or, y'know, go and ride it any other day of the year for free.
That stopping on the decent thing will cause chaos !
Cheerful this morning then you lot?
I'm not doing it (as you say, can be ridden any time) - just thought some might be interested.
Merry Christmas.
