I'm looking to build up a lightweigth steelhardtail. And one of the frames I was thinking of, was a Rocklobster 853. I was checking out the Merlin website, but couldn't find much info.
Do anyone out there have any experience with this frame? I've checked the mtbr.com forum, and the reviews wasn't all that positive.
If it turns out to be crap, do you have any other recommendations? My plan is to build up a sub 10kg(sorry for the metric, I'm norwegian) bike with 100mm travel.
Rocky Mountain Blizzard?
Too expensive, heavy and difficult to get hold of. But I wouldn't mind one!
Blizzards aren't that heavy and easily build-able 25lbs or so, superb ride as well! 😀
Where can I get one and the weight? What about Pipedream, any good?
If you want to build a sub 10kg Hardtail, I'd suggest you're far better off starting off with a Carbon, ti, or at least a very light alloy frame rather than a steel one.
Rock Lobsters are pretty good frames though, hard to beat for the money.
I already have a light alu hardtail, but I prefer seel frames. Never tried ti or carbon, too expensive and not friendly for the environtment. Steel is all i need. If I go 1*9, there is no problem to go under 10kg.
I love my Pipedream Sirius but it's not the lightest frame by any means (and there was some criticism of it being overly heavy). The new Scions are meant to be a Sirius on a diet but it might be worth confirming the weight with Pipedream if keeping the build light is a priority.
Cove Handjob? I rode one of these for a few years and it was a really good bike with the Columbus tubing.
I looked at the RL 853 a few years ago, but to be honest was put off by quite rough looking welds.
Now got a Pipedream Sirius, it replaced the Cove, the Cove probably rode nicer and was lighter.

Never been to a steel works then?
Are you saying that producing a steel frame pollutes more than carbon and ti frames? That's not what I have heard. But any way, that's not the point.
Do you know any other light steel frames?
You'll be struggling to get sub 10kg with steel without spending mucho, mucho money.
Another happy Pipedream owner here, other bike is an Orbea Alma and the Pipedream isn't that much heavier.

Look no more elswhere 😉
My RL 853 weighs in at 28lbs. That's with xt groupset,Reba SL, Thomson post, stem, EA70 bars, Bel Air Ti saddle and Time Roc xc pedals. Frame is a 17. as others have said would be hard to get lighter without lot of cash - current build if new would be around £1600.
It is a lovely bike and perfect for me with a 100mm fork. I use it for evening stuff, forests etc. Big Days I take my 5 😀
I'd say a Cove Handjob, not that I'm biased or anything.
Great ride and lighter than the rock lobster, mine weighs bs g on 27lbs with LX gears, RF Evolve triple cranks, SLX brakes, hope hoops and Thomson/USE finishing kit, with 115mm Reba Races
ianic; Can you tell me something about the frame? I think 17 is the right size for me. Weight, TT length and what about those welds. I've so many diffirent things about this frame, both good and bad.
flexo - I don't know frame weight, just fully built as per my post. Welds on mine are neat and good. My frame is nearly 5 yrs old and although it has lost a little paint is still good after weekly riding. Effective (Horiz) top tube is 560mm. I have an 85mm stem on mine and an inline post. I am 5ft 10, with a 30.5 inch inside leg and it's a perfect fit. (if you call Merlin they will give you all the geometry and weights etc, it's just that they don't put it on their website, wich is a bit weird) HTH.
Cheers
