Looking for a road (training) bike..
K Im looking for a road bike for training and I have a budget of £900..
I’ve half committed to a new Lemond Versaille 2006 that a shop has for £900. Mix of carbon and steel frame..
Before I jump into this one I was wondering if there is anything else I should be considering or if anybody has anything that might be of interest?
Never been keen on brand new bikes due to depreciation.. Rather buy a good condition second hand one and I dont have a great knowledge on road bikes hence just doing some digging for suggestions..
Thanks in advance!
E-mail james@iso25.co.uk if you have anything for sale of interest..
I bought a Trek 1.5 compact. Its light, quick, comfy, tiagra group set, a carbon fork and i think it looks great £750.
Ribble?
Why not ride your mountain bike on the road if you want some consistent, specific training? If your riding alone this is fine as its heart rate and effort that matters, not speed.
Then use the £900 to go on two training camps each year 😀
I just got a Trek 2.1. £975 Alloy frame, carbon fork. 105 groupset and a nice white saddle.
I don't think any big mfer makes bad road bikes and sh is usually a good buy - as long as you can check for usual pitfalls.
Forme?

Because it's soul destroying?

+1
Fit is important (more so than on an MTB), so make sure you try before you buy, different manufacturers come up very differently.
Sofatester..
..this is what Ive done in the past and to be honest Im not overly sold on the idea of a road bike.. However.. I think being able to ride with stronger riders on the road would be more beneficial than riding a mountain bike on the road on my own.
I've wrestled with the idea for a while and always dismissed it but Im gonna give it a go. And re the training camp I've signed up for tailored personal training so this isnt instead of getting structured proper training.
I've seen a Ribble on Ebay but its up for more money than Im prepared to pay..
Will take a look at the Treks but I think in the Trek vs Lemond the Lemond is my personal choice..
Because it's soul destroying?
Why do you say that? A slicked up MTB won’t be much different to a road bike for training purposes. Plus you wont have any issues when you get back on your MTB.
If the OP wants to spend his money im not going to stop him though 😉
Edit - Your above post came in before i pressed the magic button! If your riding with strong road riders you'll need all the help you can get. Just don't expect them to wait if you get dropped!
the Lemond is my personal choice..
I don't think they import them any more.
No they don't import Lemond anymore but I found a brand new one which I was offered at £900.. I believe they were £1400-1500 previous.. maybe wrong though.
I wouldn't expect anybody to wait for me if Im holding them up..
Anyway's Im not really wanting to justify reasons for me wanting a road bike.. I just want some suggestions on which one.. 🙂

I disagree. I ride a "slicked up MTB" to commute and I've got a proper road bike and they feel completely different. The road bike is stiffer, lighter and simply faster.
£900 should buy you a decent bike for training. If it's your first road bike, don't go for carbon fibre, especially second hand. Get something with an alu frame, carbon forks (maybe a carbon back end) and a decent groupset and wheels. Shimano stuff goes Sora - Tiagra - 105 - Ultegra - Dura Ace (best); go for something 105 or better.
I build wheels, but that's not the only reason I'd recommend a good pair of hand built wheels: they will be stronger and more durable than something with a low spoke count and should not weigh significantly more. Most Paris-Roubaix riders eschew lightweight carbon wheels for handbuilts for that race because they are more resilient.
Sorry, just a little rant. Good luck with finding a bike; contact your local roadie club if you want help and advice, and often a possible bargain.

Boardman team for grand?
zaskar.. thanks but Im sticking at £900 max or it will just keep going up.. however Ive an allowance for pedals on top so if its got pedals included? 🙂
I don't think they give you pedals but you could always haggle and offer £900 notes to the manager to see what they say...
