[Closed] Looking at a Titus FTM carbon - good or bad?

[#4248178]

I'm looking to replace my Heckler frame. It's a medium, and I've finally decided its too short for me. I'm 5'11 and 92kg. Whilst my broken bones heal from my Les Gets crash, ive been contemplating a FTM carbon frame. My normal riding is in Sussex - Friston type stuff, hilly not mountainous, mainly natural trails, with the odd jump/drop. Very muddy in Winter - hence the internally routed full length cables of the FTMc are very appealing, as is the price!!

I reckon maybe a L with a short stem would suit me.

Any feedback from current owners appreciated.

It pisses on my old heckler in every way. The rear mech has an exposed section on the chainstay btw. I am 6FT 2 and the large is spot on, at your height i would be going for a medium if i am honest.

Mine is built up with some half decent stuff but nothing super fancy and its about 26lb inc pedals

Thanks Rob - I am really undecided between M &L. What stem do you have on yours?

Does anybody use a dropper post, and does the cable route ok?

If the alloy one is anything to go by, go for it.
I have an alloy one with the carbon seatstays, its billed as a medium, but has a 19" seatube.
I am 6'2", with 31" inside leg if that helps, running an 80mm stem
I love it

70mm stem, running 1x10 so dropper cable uses front mech routing

My cranks are x0 2x10, so would have to improvise a dropper routing.

I could either use my 150 revs with 1 1/8 steerer or Talas 140 with tapered. Both 15mm. The Revs are my favourites, but have a bar mounted lockout. I'm thinking that and a dropper remote is too much on my bars.

Thanks for the advice chaps - I think I might just go for it.

Hi Rob,

Following with interest as it's on my potential new frame list......

How does it handle? Bit unsure on the steep head angle-that's the only thing that worries me at the moment!

I know you can't fit an angleset but maybe you could fit offset bushes-what is the shock mount hardware like? M6 bolt or M8?

I'm 5' 10" and leaning towards a medium.

Thanks in advance,

A

that worried me also coming from a heckler then latterly a nomad. But with a 150mm fork its great (wide easton havoc carbon bars). Cleaning stuff i struggled with previously

Contemplating one of these as well, as the el guapo just seems too much for me, but need a bike for english riding/ welsh day rides and the annual pilgramage to spain.

Sweet - thanks!

I'd be running 150 revelations and 750 havoc bars too - with a reverb and 1x10 xt! You have good taste in kit!

What's it like climbing and descending? I prefer the downs........

I'm coming from a 2012 Five - had a Five (just sold it to another STW'er - who was great to deal with!) so in market for something around the 140mm travel mark.

Hmmm, decisions!!

Nice one-thanks!

Don't suppose you know what the head angle and BB height is with the 150 fork?

How did you overcome the issues that were reported on an earlier thread?
1. rear tyre rub problems
2. very limited headset choice
3. rear mech compatability (due to the position of the chainstay pivot)
4. creaking seatclamp

Just another one-what size did you get and how tall are you?

And what length/drop is your reverb? I've got the 420mm 125mm drop-just want to check it fits.

Mine is a joplin - 4" drop BUT it is only 1" up from the collar - very long seat tube
6ft 2" with a 33" inseam
went for a large (would have a medium if i was 6ft)

I see. For some reason thought you had a reverb - might have been a different thread I was thinking of.

I'll call on-one on Monday to see what they say.

What warranty does the FTM come with?

A bit far to travel then!

How long is the seat tube on your large? BB axle to top of tube?

Sorry for all the questions-but it's nice to find someone who has one that can help out with my questions!

Cool-thanks Rob.

Looking at it it looks like the reverb will just fit with the collar against the seat clamp.

Hopefully the seat tube is free from obstructions all the way down to allow me to fit the reverb in ok.

Thanks again Rob - really helpful!

Rob - all great info, thanks very much. Could you sensibly route a dropper externally?

[img] [/img]

i would cable tie to the front mech outer next to the entry hole, under/through the shock mount, and the secure to the front mech outer where it exits

Thanks Rob, that would work nicely - when I get home from France (hurray for iPhones!!) it may well be credit card time!!

This must be a first - everybody on topic for 2 pages!! I was expecting lots of "don't buy that buy this instead" but refreshingly all useful stuff - must be a mix of summer holidays and the olympics!!

Before I finally pull the trigger on this, is there any reason it couldn't handle a few days in the alps each year with a 150 fork?

Also, any reason this headset wouldn't fit?

Many thanks.

Just be aware - you can't fit an angleset to the carbon FTM. The bearings sit in the frame (i.e. the frame acts as the headset cups) so you wouldn't be able to fit angleset cups.

It is probably possible with the alloy FTM since it uses a different style of headset.

Correct.

Though Workscomponents were looking at doing a slackset for the FTM.

Great read everyone!

Go and get one - I did...

I bought a frame off here at the end of last year & built it up over the winter. Its a large and I am 6ft with a 32" inside leg measurement. I have a set back seat & a 110mm stem as I like to stretch out...

I was going to use one of my other bikes as a doner - but it was so good & light I decided to keep it a weight weenie. Many components came off here (thanks all) and its built with XTR stuff throughout. Crankset & cassette; Rear & front mechs & shifters; Hope cemamic BB; Cane Creek headset (reduced to take 1 1/8 steerer (because I have several sets on other bikes; Hope Evo 2 hubs with ZTR with tubeless Nobby Nics; and finished with Ritchey carbon seat pin; stem and handlebars. Hope tec M4 brakes; Goodridge hoses & floating rotors & matchmakers connecting the shifters.

It was high 25lbs with a set of 140mm Dual air Revs - but I have just put a set of 140mm Dual air revs with U-Turn, lock-out and a maxle which has just pushed it up to 26.5lbs.

It really is a great bike - great fun to build & even better to ride. Get one. I am in North Herts if you want a test ride!

John

I'm also a happy FTM owner. 1.80m tall and I ride a medium. Had a medium stumpy that got nicked... Slightly shorter but nothing that not adaptable to. Makes it more "flickable."

150 mm revs slacken head by 1/2 a degree which seems plenty really. Not sure i'd bother with a slackset even it was available. Reverb sits in the frame a long way but fine. Only issue is the hydraulic hose for the dropper. It's currently cable-tied to the outside (with bike tape to protect the frame at rub points) as I'm running 2x10 so all the internal routes used.

Liking it so much will replace it with another when the next model has the routings sorted out.

Done!! Finally pushed the button!!! It turns up next week hopefully!!

Now, I have 2 forks - tapered talas 140, or 1 1/8 150 Revs, both 15mm axles.

Either will fit the FTMc or my other bike, a C456.

I'm leaning towards the Talas on the FTM, but have a nagging feeling the extra HA slackness from 10mm on the revs would be nice.

10mm will be more like 6 or 7 by the time you're sat on it, it'll make almost sod all difference.

(roughly 0.25 degrees)
