IMO if 400mm aint long enough you need a bigger frame

It depends on the max extension too. Thomson's min amount within frame is less than most so a 410 is equiv to 430 or so with other brands. Make sure your frame will be OK though

mdb, did you race at big dog?

I'm on a Fisher Ferrous 29er which has a long seat tube extension above the top tube so need extra long post so i make sure it get far enough into the frame. So i actually need more in the frame not less.

cool, I thought that might be the case seeiing your other post. I saw a bent frame from possibly lack of insertion at the big dog...

Aha! Yep, the guys at Trek UK have managed to source the last 19" Ferrous in the world from the goold ole' USA and are shipping it to me.

I just don't want to take the same risk again so getting a long seat post seems a wise move.

I bent two Roox posts... from my experience I can recomend you get a BlackSpire - very long and very strong (limited sizes though).
