[#436953]

Hi, doing a 'mini-training camp' & looking for longish steady road climbs around Sheffield - staying around stocksbridge/langsett side of the city. Only know short, sharp climbs but nothing around 20mins long or longer. Thought about driving to Holmfirth & doing Holme Moss (is that 20mins long?).
Any advice from locals appreciated, thanks, Dave

You don't want short sharp climbs? So that's a no to Pea Royd Lane where they're holding that hill climb race ๐Ÿ™‚

Long 20 minute plus climbs? It's all a bit short and sharp round here isn't it. Suppose you could do Holme Moss, or maybe that road that goes from the bottom of the Woodhead over the dam wall and up over to Glossop.

There might be some good long climbs that take you up to Spicer Hill windfarm too, I'm not near my maps or else I'd have a look.

There's no point in driving to Holme Moss, cycle over there - its not far.

Likewise head over to the Derbyshire side - Froggat is a good long (ish) steady climb, and you can wheel back down again and do Curbar as well straight from the bottom. Also Snake Pass (in both directions).

How much road traffic do you like? Snake pass (A57) from Ladybower resv towards Glossop is one of the longest, not particularly steep, but long. You could go to glossop and back doing a long climb in both directions, or for a slightly larger but loop ride, up snake pass, into glossop, then back over woodhead pass (A628).

the minor road that runs from near the old wortley forge up thru Green Moor (well hill) and out towards Langsett on the hill above stocksbridge (barnsley side) gives 20mins or so steady uphill - usually into the wind

also try the road that comes out of Barnsley past Stainborough Castle thru Hood Green and Bagger Wood and again up to Thurgoland

out of Lower Bradfield towards the Moscar end of the Strines/Mortimer road past Gibraltar Rocks (Hoar Stonres Lane?) is a long pull rather than steep

thanks guys - the thought of riding Woodhead in that traffic doesn't appeal that much! Is Holme Moss a 20min climb? Did it years ago into a gale force wind during a sportif, most were forced to walk up or get blown over the barriers.
Looking for steep/steady enough to do some threshold type efforts - have to do them on the flat (or turbo) around here so looking for something different.

If you're gonna get in the car anyway (which as stated above is a bit unneccessary really for Holmfirth, it's really not far at all - 10 mins from Stocksridge in car...) you might as well head out Buxton way - a few folk on here were talking about good long darkside climbs out near the Cat and Fiddle a while ago (might be old forum).

It would be rude not to do the Midhopestones -Strines Inn road (although the hills are definitely sharp most aren't short. If you wanted to make a decent ride of it ride out through Langsett to Holmfirth & do Holme Moss turn right onto the woodhead road then left onto the back way into Glossop then either come back over Snake Pass (definitely not short hill) or head out to Hayfield, Chinley, & Chapel before climbing up Ashop Edge (Not short again). Down either Mam Tor Nick or Winnets. Along the valley to Grindleford left to Ladybower right onto A57 and if you,ve got the energy back over Strines to Midhopestones (If you don't follow the A57 back to Sheffield).
Unless you just going to do hill reps (or other sick nastiness) driving to Holmfirth will just spoil the ride
The long route is about 75 miles worth.

Is Holme Moss a 20min climb?
depends on how fast/slow you ride! Probably not, no.
But give it a go, and whilst you're there, get on the A635 from Holmfirth over to Greenfield. And then ride it again the other way. Should be pushing 20 mins each way.

Great ideas guys, that helps a lot. Sounds like its a cycling mecca up there - I only started cycling when I left the area 20 years ago!

Looking for steep/steady enough to do some threshold type efforts - have to do them on the flat (or turbo) around here so looking for something different.

- Snake Pass (either way although out of Glossop is more of a lung ripper)
- Rushop edge (Chapel en le Frith up to Mam Tor)
- Yorkshire Bridge up to Stanage Edge and on to Sheffield
- Midhopestones up to Penistone (although can be a real grovel if your having a bad day)
- Froggatt (Starts near Calver Cross Roads)
- Millers Dale up through Wormhill
All spinnable but can be real long lung busters if your chasing someone or putting in an effort

Sorry I may have got Grindleford mixed up with Bamford on the previous post

is Midhope up to Penistone a long drag
might be if on your way home!
1 in 6 section in first mile, greasy shaded by trees - "only" about a mile uphill - closed to vehicles since Sheffield floods and still closed i think! doesn't figure on any my regular routes but i'd assume passable on a bike as all other closures have been and pleasanter without traffic

Lots of roadies from Wakefield and Barnsley stop at the Bankside cafe in Langsett so a cup of tea and a bun might get some local favourites

Haven't been up the Penistone Midhope climb since the floods (moved house) but always used it as a bit of additional suffering after riding the Strines Road. Its a good exercise in grovelling up the first half & recovering enough to spin the last half (If that can be described as a good exercise).

Do a search for sportives in that area - they'll cover the climbs.

I only know the Derbyshire bits, but as already mentioned, Snake Pass and Froggatt are long and steady, there's the drag out of Bradwell up to the Tideswell crossroads, which can then be linked to the road over Monsall Head to Ashford in the Water (then round Bakewell/Chatsworth round to Calver and back up Froggatt to make a loop)

If you are going further afield, Cat and Fiddle is 6-7 miles long, Long Hill between Buxton and Whaley Bridge is about 3 miles each way. Chapel en le Frith up to Mam Tor (Rushup road?) is a long steady drag, or Edale to Mam Tor, though that can be a bit vicious.

If you can get down to Cromford on the A6 you can pick up the Via Gellia which is 7 deceptively gentle miles up to Newhaven. Any road into Winster or Crich involves a long climb to, Whatstandwell to Wirksworth is about 3 miles.

my favourite training ride was always to start in sheffield,

Broomhill (nice warmup)
Manchester road A57 (hmm getting steep)
Folow the road (A57) all the way to Glossop, Snakes Pass is propper climb, if you've not ridden big climbs for a while it may be worth swaping for bigger cassette as it's not the last one of the day!
In Gossop turn left at the trafic lights (use google maps to fid the ones i mean)
That climb on the A624 takes you all the way to chappel
Turn left in chapel, and take the road back upto winnats, beware winnats is scary, be very very sure your brakes are working properly as you'll be dragging them the whole way down.

Only one more climb back up over Stanage/houdkirk to go, take your pick, they all hurt.

The whole thing can be done without a map, but its a lot easier with one

"Turn left at the traffic lights" - probably the most deceptively blase description of Chunal and Chinley Heads I've read!
