Looking to buy an SLX 2x10 groupset and I am confused about SGS vs GS rear derailleurs. The SLX chainset is 26/38 and I am considering either a 11-34 or 11-36 cassette, but have no idea which derailleur each setup would need. Using a formula I found, the capacity of these give 35 or 37 respectively. Any advice welcome
CRC website says the GS is 36 Max so that would be ok on the 11-34 cassette but not the 11-36. You'd be better off with the long cage SGS.
I run a med cage on a 1 x 11-42 no issues
I have a medium xt with 11-36, no issues here either.
I also have a medium xt with 11-36, 24/36 Chainrings, no issues here either.
24-36 and 26-38 cranks, 11-36 cassette with a med cage RD here. Get the clutch (shadow plus) version!!!
You'd need a 37 tooth capacity rear der:
Front 38-26 = 12
+Rear 36-11 = 25
------------------------
12 + 25 = 37
Generally, medium cage for a double and long cage for a triple (at least for stock crank ratios). One possible exception would be if there is a lot of chain growth in a rear suspension design.
Of course, if you do something weird with the chainring setup...
Thanks for the responses, will definitely be the shadow plus with clutch. Sounds like it is past the tolerance shimano recommend but it will be ok and lots of people have them fitted.
