[#3207437]

im wanting to swap from sram to xt shifters, so am looking for shifters and mech still. (M770 shifters anyone?)

ive been offered an xt rear mech, medium cage. ive done a bit of googling and it seems to imply i need long cage with triple chainset. am i right in thinking id be fine with it as long as i didnt try and put it in large/large rings? anything less than that woud be fine?

id be grateful to hear any plusses and negatives

thanks

I run a medium cage SRAM mech with a triple. Large-Large is fine as long as you set the chain up by going large-large without the mech and add 2 links. If you try and use the granny ring with the smallest 2 or 3 cogs on the cassette then the mech can't take up the slack, however that's a combination you shouldn't be using anyway.

You'll risk snapping either the mech or mech hanger if you go with the medium cage and have a lapse in concentration

Each cage size can handle a certain capacity. You need to figure out what capacity you need by adding together the difference in the number of teeth between the largest and smallest rings and largest and smallest cassette cogs.

Pretty sure you should run a long cage

Ooops think I've got that wrong, davewalsh is right, it just wont take up the slack in the smaller cogs. They snap when the chain is too short
