i want to change my rear mech on 3x9 [the front is standard size 22/32/44 but the rear cassette is 11-26] will a medium cage fit or do i need to stick with long cage?

Yes you'll be fine with a medium cage rear mech, I run 11-28 & 26/36/48 with a medium cage no problem

I think a medium is ok up to an 11-32 cassette but not a 34 hence it should be ok for yours.
You would never be in the large front and large rear anyway.
