Would like to build a steel framed bike with drop bars for road/off-road definitely not for racing
Straggler is about right but quite heavy
Anything else?
Which aspects of the Straggler are you interested in? Price, geometry, disc-readiness, steel-ness?
All of those although I accept price may increase for a lighter frame/fork
sparkly pinkness?
Do you need it to be singlespeedable/internal hubgearable?
No - regular gears only
mounts for guards and racks and things?
Salsa Colossal?
Ideally yes
Although frame bags and clip on guards might work instead
I think the colossal is more of a comfy, all-day road bike than an on/off road bike? strength would probably be fine, but not clearance for larger tyres.
They say the Colossal takes 30s or 28s with fenders, which might be enough.
I'm quite fond of my Escapade; I haven't weighed the bare frame, but I don't think it is very light.
You need to decide if you want lighter 'racier' frame or a tourer. There are loads of each.
If racier then personally, as someone who has a posh tubed steel Salsa cyclocross bike, surly cross check and had a few others, id just get a full carbon or alu frame with carbon fork. The weight saving makes a big difference, price wise they are similar too.
For a touring capable offroad bike, well you can get away with a lighter frame but depends on the load. If light or only occasional load id probably get a Pro6.
Been looking at same type
Salsa wardbird but no racks
Kinesis Tripster ATR
Shand Stoater
or my favourite the Niner RLT steel or aluminium
Thanks all
STATO - do you not find there is some marginal extra comfort from a steel frame versus ally on rough roads?
I was looking at buying the Straggler as a frameset and building it up into a lighter tourer than the LHT.
Looked at most of the others listed, wanted a light(ish) bike, with discs, and 1 x 11 drivechain that would be comfortable. Must have rear rack, and mudguard eyes.
I have settled for a Charge Plug 5 titanium complete bike as it fits the bill perfectly. Will be expecting delivery in the next fw days.

Build your own ๐
Seriously - you need to consider what you want it to do.
Most comfort gains will come from a small diameter seatpost and bigger tyres. Seatstays will make some difference, but that really depends on what and who it is made for - my curvy skinny 12.7mm stays do allow a bit of compliance and are fine for a 62kg rider without panniers.
Change those rider / use variables and the design (and comfort) changes.

Yes, there is some deadening of impacts, less reverberation, but you still get the hit. Carbon stays on alu frame does that better tho (had both a Voodoo Limba and a specialized like that).
Dont get me wrong like love steel, my Crosscheck is my favourite bikes, but ive not found a steel CX frame with discs yet (within my budget) that is light.
If you want steel, get the Straggler and accept the weight, maybe change the fork to carbon (makes a comfort and weight difference compared to steel disc forks). If you want light, go light and good design, dont get hung up on frame material.
If you're only boddin' about on it then the Surly will probably be fine. I can put out over 400 watts in a sprint though, and found my Surly a bit too flexy, so got rid after only a few months of ownership.
Loads of similar bikes though: Croix de Fer; Pinnacle Arkose; Condor Fratello; Ritchey Swisscross; All City something etc. etc.
I think the Singular Disc Kite is on its way. More on the race end of the spectrum, though, Carbon fork I think?
Thanks - I want frameset rather than full bike
What about the ps bish bash bosh, seems to be an ATR carbon equivalent. Not sure about the frame set only deal though.
Soma Wolverine. Tange Concept tubing so may be lighter than the straight 4130 Staggler/Cross Check. It's 650b so has pretty good tyre clearances.
Have you ridden a Straggler? I wouldn't get hung up on the weight as having ridden one, I came away impressed. I have a Tripster ATR which is really nice and a very versatile and fun bike to ride. However, it's a damn sight more expensive. What about All City? Some of their bikes look lush!
