I have a set of these Endura ones I know they're marketed as a gravel short, but for me they're just really nice stretchy light shorts. Not too long and the knees flare out ever so slightly so they sit nicely with knee pads. zipped hip pockets, my normal size iPhone Xs fits comfortably and doesn't irritate (unlike some Fox trousers that I've got).

I paid less than £40 for mine from Evans (from a PSA on here) but like them enough to be considering a second pair at a higher price.

You won't want to hear this... but the Rapha ones are perfect. I only got mine because I had a voucher for an old coat they couldn't repair... because they're not around £50 ish I'm afraid. But I'm converted. Will watch the sales this winter for another pair for next summer...

those endura ones look a great slim fit, exactly in my head what im after! @momo

i like the look of the assos ones, but were a little over budget, and cant see any discount codes to bring them down sadly - they do look good though, whats the sizing like on them?

Patagonia Landfarer, although £20 over your price, are really nice, super comfortable, and free repairs, zipper pockets, plenty pad room, not overly baggy - I got mine on sale a while back for less than £50 but there are new colours now, so back to full RRP, but worth it

Landfarer X2. I too got them in a sale and are now the only shorts I wear. Even in the winter the pairs of Humvees and other heavier shorts remain in the draw.

Here you go, these are pretty much what you describe...
https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/nukeproof-blackline-shorts-with-liner/rp-prod205267

Thin, not too long (slight risk of **** gappage), fine with pads.

Good VFM at that price with a decent liner included.

Mine do seem to slip down a bit when I'm wearing my fannypack, but I'm not sure if that's the shorts' fault.

As someone famous on here for perforating their shorts I can thoroughly recommend the humvee lite.
If I find them ok so will anyone.

If they are the same material as the Blackline pants, then they're really nice and light but surprisingly durable

They have a stretchy waistband at the back, so 30 might do the trick, esp if you want them less baggy. My waist size has been known to oscillate wildly but mine have always fitted

Endura Singletrack Lite in short fit are good, I'm finding. I got those for £50. Very light airy material. I like the fit. I had to get a lairy colour to get the cheapest deal but quietly I kind of like that. Might as well be visible.

Double the money but I also like my 7mesh ones enough to say that I think they are worth a significant premium. Although they are I suppose more like "gravel" shorts and I wear them off the bike as much as (if not more than) on.

I've got these Assos Trail Shorts really lightweight and comfy and absolutely rustle-free. Not sure what they would be like in a crash though.

ah thats a good point, are these mentioned shorts all noise free? i had a pair of shorts years ago did my head in constantly making awful noises every pedal stroke either due to the material or the fact they bunched up

@honourablegeorge - 😉 very good pun ha! most of the ones mentioned on here are exactly what im after so comes down to cost really now

I got some northwave ones from Merlin that fit the description. Came with a liner short too.

No noise from the Landfarer or the Blackline (pants) in my experience

Picked up some thin, light Dare 2b summer shorts cheap from Go Outdoors a couple of months back. Spot on, unless you're picky about pockets on riding shorts...

I was about to recommend Showers Pass Cross Country shorts especially as there's a singletrack discount code somewhere.  Unfortunately they're sold out on their own website, but maybe worth seeing if in stock anywhere else?

I bought these because I was away and needed some shorts https://www.gaynors.co.uk/mens-c4/shorts-c232/mens-kiwi-long-shorts-p16584/s56062

Been really pleased with them so bought a black pair too. They’re not riding specific but I’ve been wearing them on the bike quite a lot.
