Sitting here nursing a nasty gashed knee that's going to keep me off the bike for at least another week (probably two). Always wear pads (Kyle Straits) when I go somewhere techy and rocky but not local rides which is where I suffered the injury. Never again - learned my lesson.

Any recommendations for lightweight 'XC' knee protection or should I just stick with the Kyle Straits?

Cheers Tony. Are they nice, light and flexible?

Also, am I OK for another Sunday at Herts once the knee heals?

Troy Lee kg 5400 are very light and minimalist. Comfy too. No side of the knee protection though if that's on your list of must haves.

I wear 661 Rhythm knee pads for longer, less technical rides. It's just a bit of foam sewn onto a knee warmer, but has saved knee and shins a few times.
