Right very simply I want some good mtb lights. Should I consider anything else? Thinking of teh adventure 4 set up
I will use then for off road night riding the Strath Puffer next year, commuting night fell running, winter climbing in Scotland and camping etc.
Its the requirement to use them besides just on the bike that makes me think this os the route to go.
Thanks
I'm mulling over 4Fourths and Trouts. A tricky one.
AyUps are perfect for the likes of the 'Puffer. I use them in the race.
Plenty light, long-lasting batteries, designed to fit no hassle.
before you try anything else try the Cree lights they sell on e bay for £20 i bought Two, & i think they are fantastic for pitch black trail use. I wouldn't even consider spending hundreds until you trial these out & if your still not happy only £20 spent, & go and spends hundreds.

Sounds good, but when you're looking for a light that's got to run for 17-18 hours straight go for products that have been proven in that environment.
(Speaking as a person who has twice had name brand lights go out halfway through a lap)
Ay Ups come with 3 batteries in the good kit with is 8hrs run time and a car charger
My Ay UP's failed just over 2 seasons old.
Toutie has turbo'ed them 3 times better than they were
I wouldn't buy another set of AY UPS and I wouldn't recommend them now either.
The Ay-up batteries seem to last an age - 9hrs for the ultra (or epic or whatever it is called) and about 6hrs for the mini (or normal)...which is very good...
If you are looking for a modular, flexible set-up the Adventure 4 will be very hard to beat. I usually use a helmet mount and a bar mount with the half epics, it gives loads of light for riding, even on half power. For endurance events you can put the full epic on the bike and forget about it all night. They make a very light, powerful, adjustable head-torch. With 2 units and 3 batteries it will take a lot of failures to leave you standing in the dark, and you hear very little about bad reliability.
JohnClimber did you give Ayups a chance to sort you out? Now that they are getting set up in the UK it should make it easier to get support, spare mounts etc.
You should have a serious look at these www.ledgendlights.co.uk excellent value for money, 1000 lumen output on the 4 LED light and the battery lasts ages.
I wrapped my Ayups round a tree and managed to ovalise one of the lamps. Although it still worked I was worried it may be more susceptible to water ingress and stop working sooner rather than later. Emailed them and sent them back and they replaced them, only charging for postage which I thought was fair enough. Can't fault their customer service. I know there are brighter/cheaper lights but I think the Ayups are a great alround package. I use them a lot so reckon over time they'll be very good value.
I have had 3 sets of ayups for over 3 years, not sure why Johnclimber didn't send them back, they used to have lifetime warranty on lights, I believe its ten years now, i reversedin my car over a set 2 years ago and cracked one of the lights,it still worked and they sorted me a new one FOC before I had even posted the broken one back, i also own a set of cateye triple shot that trouty modded to 1800 lumens clicky link, now in my opinion the trouty light is fantastic but is far more than you need to ride off road,i love my ayups, they have a good beam pattern, great battery life, lots of spares available,i even use one as my rear light
