So this might be moon on a stick territory. What I'm after:
Single light with internal battery (low weight)
Bright enough for commuting on the road bike on dark lanes and for offroad on the mountain bike
Less than £50
Any recommendations?
Cheers
I don't think it exists.
Plenty available if you can deal with a separate battery pack
Or you'll need to whack the budget up
That's what I feared, but wondered if I'd missed something!
Er if it must have the battery in the light unit then an 18650 Li-on XPG or XML torch and mount would do it.
Personally I'd just by a £20 XML bastid with separate battery.
I use a Hope Vision 1 on the Road Bike.
It uses AA batteries and is pretty lightweight, I used it for a while on the MTB and it gave decent light but the only issue I had was there is no battery indicator and it doesn't just drop down a notch in power, if it goes low on Battery it just goes off completely.
Bit dodgy but a good light if the power is kept topped up.
Used Joystick
I'm after something similar, though I don't need to use it off road. I thought this might work:

I "need" an integral battery as I have to leave the bike outside a lot, swap between bikes etc. TBH it's not such a faff to do with the DX light I've been using. Upgraditis I think.
Have a look at the Moon lights discounted at On One

Buy two. You need cells (free from an old laptop or about £3 - £9 each depending on quality), a charger (£5) and mounts (£2 each - bar and lid - for MTB you will want both). I would also buy a LIPO bag to charge the cells in and a timer switch, as I am cautious of cheap chinese electrics... but you are still within budget.
I have 3 of these - in addition to the 3 older XML-T6s, and an XML-U3 C8... Next year, when there's an even better LED, an upgrade will be £10!
For commuting you will want to run on LOW, or on MED but angled down - the beam pattern is not very car friendly and they are very bright on MED power. My XM-L2s have a really good driver - so just under 1 amp on MED which is plenty bright and lasts a good 2.5 hours.
I've still got this to sell for £38 posted if you're interested.

Torchy's BK500 matches your description. Only 500 lumens, but its good enough for road and mtb. Neat little unit. Bracket is tight on OS bars, but is v secure.
That Moon 600 looks like a good buy. IME, it's a balance between being seen, being able to see, price and battery life. Joysticks on their own aren't bright enough for off-road in mixed light. They're also not visible from the side when on the road. I've found that a Diablo and toggling between modes works best for me.
My commute is 3 miles of country lanes, 3 miles of off-road and 7 miles of road/cycle path in a busy city.
Has external battery, but an X2 is my current commute light...
I've got a Lezyne Super Drive XL that was under £50 when I bought it. It was on sale so might be more than that now.
