Trying to decide on first set of lights.

What do you use? flood+ spot on the bars or flood on bars=spot on head?

usually flood on bars spot on head.

I have only ever needed a spot on my head.

+ 1 for the Magicshine 900lumen, does a great job without costing a fortune.

I am leaning towards a smudge XML for my helmet to start me off (never done a night ride before), rather than the magicshine.

I have emailed troutie to see if he still has any lumicycle conversion kits for the old lumicycle stuff I picked up a while ago.

I know this has all been done before but appreciate the feedback.

I've got an Exposure 6pack. It's total overkill but tremendous fun. I just carry a petzl Tikka for repairs etc

If you want something in a Lumi can I've a 3x R2 Cree set up - probably puts out @600 lumen. Runs off a 14.8/15v pack
Let me know if you want a pic/more info

Smudge light on the helmet is a brilliant idea. Only criticism is the mount could be a bit better and less ungainly. Despite that - buy one.

Interesting you prefer a head mount for one light option tj, can I ask why? Other than the obvious seeing round bends of course

Right. Cheers all who commented. I need to get out and cycle more in the dark eves so have hit pay on a Smudge. Reckon he should give a commission to STW ๐Ÿ˜†

See how I get on with that then may add a bar mounted one just to annoy any local stargazers.

I used to go with one-on-head-one-on-bars. Then I got an MJ-872, which is just a little more expensive than buying 2 cheaper Magicshines but when headmounted is far more effective than that.

So that's my recommendation- one good light on the head, makes bar lights unneccesary (though, still desirable to have a spare tbh!)

Trout modified Lumi HID can (triple xm-l) on bars with upgraded Ay-Up's on helmet. Plenty light...

However the Trout light is powered by a Smudge battery pack...all parts of this system have been faultless.

Thought that might be the case - I've never done any night riding but was led to believe it was always best to have a bar/head combo

Smudge light on the bars here, great light and service from Smudge. Well recommended. Would love to buy one for the helmet as well.

Magicshine 900 Lumen on bars, Hope Vision 2 on helmet.

I have poor eyesight even with contact lenses in but with these two lights I can keep up on the weekly night ride!

Interested to know why it's more effective? Beam pattern? Neater?

For me it's strong flood on bar and a spot on helmet. If I'd have to choose only one I'd rather have bar mounted than helmet mounted.

The lower bar position makes the view more 3D in terms of casting shadows of undulations etc.
Too strong a helmet light can "outshine" the bar mounted light and everything looks "flat". I guess the same happens when you've got only a helmet light!?

By the way: have to get new helmet light, my LED Lenser B7 is too heavy on helmet and gradually fades away during 2h ride. Any recommendations for a helmet light/helmet mount that doesn't get ripped off and/or destroyed by the first low hanging branch?

Wouldn't mind a lower lumen Magicshine for the helmet. But they seem to be mounted very high and look like they would either snap off or break all the time. Or is there a way of mounting lights more to the front of the helmet so that they are out of branches' ways?

Bump...

To those of you who have the Smudge light - is it a flood or spot? I need a helmet mounted light for the twisty Bristol singletrack, so I reckon a spot's where it's at.

any complaints about the smudge light appear to be that it is not floody enough, more of a spot

Smudge is a top chap: light ordered Sunday afternoon, on my desk Tuesday lunchtime. Can't wait to try it out.
