my wife rides a surly troll, standard 3 x 9 build, fitted with mary bars, full guards, tortec rack and schwalbe marathon tyres.
when i pick it up, it feels a bit hefty to me, dont know why.
it is a 16'' tiny thing. mrs is 5ft. 10.5 stone.
thinking about trying to lighten it up for her a wee bit.
it needs a good service, not been touched since bought 4 years ago, so thinking new 2 x 10 gearing. she spins gears, so no outer needed.
any ideas how to lighten it up a bit for her?
Wheels? Posher Marathons?
You could start with a lightweight frame. Otherwise you're just turd-polishing.
Changing to 2x10 isn't going to save much unless you're going XTR/XX.
Lighter wheels will probably be a good idea, as would lighter tyres. Then you're into carbon bits....
Damn it, I thought you were asking about tightening up the wife's tourer.

lost cause that mate..... ๐

helpful. you could lend her that wee titanium thing of yours.... ๐
Someone already has it on loan ๐
Is it steel forks on the Troll too? Something lightweight there could make quite a difference and needn't cost the earth.
was thinking carbon forks, new lighter wheels, carbon bars, stem and seat post. 2 x 10 and some narrower lighter tyres.
she dont carry much, just 2 small panniers. i carry the bulk.
Sounds a similar spec to my tourer its not built for speed.....it does fly down hills though, hard to stop too. I did take the mudguards off.
Troll is a cool bike. But no surly was ever described as light. Got a drill?
If she's not carrying much, you could save a chunk on the wheels.
Exal rims are lighter than Sputniks, or risk a decent MTB rim?
Ryde do a few, Yura/Trace might be worth a go.
Some decent new WTB models around in 26 too.
Marathon Supremes are loads lighter than the standard models, could she get away with the 1.6's?
Alternatively, put your hand in your pocket and get her an ebike, you tight sod.

Pete, just ordered some exals built on xt hubs, from Spa.
i asked here about a ebike, and she swore at me.
and she loves the surly, says she is comfy on it, just asked me if i could lighten it a bit.
like i said, it needs a full service, everything needs changing, and a new groupset takes me lass than a hour to put on. easiest option.

Which rims did you go for?
Went for the DC19's on mine which save a chunk over Sputs.
Still look bloody tough though.
Disc only too, so I'd hope the metal is where it's needed, not beefing up sidewalls that'll never see a brake block.
same ones mate. dc19. just ordered some 1.6 supremes too. half the weight of the marathons she has on now.
What chainset has it got? hollowtech?
If its square taper etc you can easily shave some weight there.
it is hoolwtech. middle and inner are shot, so new deore chainset fitted with 22/32 going on.
mary bars weigh a load, carbon flats and ergons will be fitted to shave some there.
Ive got a spare deore double chainset if you want one cheap, but by the time you get the chainrings you want not sure if it would be worth it.
