My 8yr old is loving his biking. Able to do FTD and Monkey at Cannock in a day, but I really need to lighten up his bike, give him a bit more of a chance at the hills and stuff, so we can get out on the steep natural stuff.
Its a 24" Trek MT220, got it 2nd hand off here so maybe 4yrs old. Frame is solid.
Problem is the front end - crap fork, threaded headset, a bodged together heavy stem fashioned from a scrap BMX.
Any thoughts on a fork/headset that would fit but not cost the same as just getting a whole new bike?
Would be fine getting a 26" fork and fit 24" wheel/disc but the more I look around the more ££££ it all adds up to!
could you not change the headset to aheadset and bobs your uncle?
Haven't measured but I presume its a 1 1/8" and will take an Ahead. What cheap but effective fork?
Get a magnet and go over the componets, steel handle bars etc.
The 26in forks would make the front end a little tale.
rigid imo
Ditch it and buy a Beinn 24 instead. Much lighter than the competition.
My daughter has one of those. A proper little bike.
Both of my twin girls have Beinn 24s. Good light bikes. odds on they will be upgrading to the next size up.
Thanks guys.
He already went through a Beinn20 (they grow so fast!) but I just couldnt spend the huge cash for the 24 knowing its only a short time before 26 is needed.
CK - thats a bling nice setup. Confirms I can put all proper kit on the front end. Shortened SID how? Still 24" wheel?
Still 24" wheels, SIDs locked down with a simple spacer on the damper shaft. At least with air forks you can tune them to the rider weight, the old forks hardly moved and had no detectable damping at all.
