[#951415]

Hi all,

I am hoping to modify my Lumicycle Led3 bike light. It currently has 3 Cree XRE - R2 LED's and i have the following questions.

1) Can i retrofit XPG LED's to the existing MCPCB using the existing driver?
2) Can i retrofit the following http://www.cutter.com.au/proddetail.php?prod=cut936 with XPG's and install in the lamp with the existing driver?

I need more Lumens damn it 🙂

Thanks all in advance.

would have thought so yes, you may need new optics though

Never seen inside one but it may be possible if you have it in bits chuck up a few pics

but the XPG leds are daed small compared to the R2s

The linked to stuff should fit and be easier

Does that board come with the led's os is it just the Metal PCB?
If not I'll be interested in a pair with some optics.

I am going to ask cutters whether they can supply with the led's attached, they do some boards like that already. The optics look identical to the ones on my Lumicycle light so i wouldn't be surprised if they don't use the same board etc. Tried to open the light last night but its held together with silly small Torx bolts so need to get a new bit to undo them.

As i understand the output current from the existing driver will be at set levels suitable to the R2's so if the input current for the XP-G's matches i`m good to go. i.e if max mode on the light is at 1000mA and the XP-g's are rated to this i'll be ok. Am i right!?

Will put some pics up later

Thanks

I would get hold of a 2nd hand lumicycle halogen lamp casing or something similar, and buy a driver too. It'd cost you a few more quid, but then you're not risking screwing up the very expensive lumicycle light just for a little bit of extra light. It'll be dead fiddly soldering to get those LEDs in anyway, and it'd be an expensive mistake if you screwed up something inside the lumicycle.

You have to love Lumicycle.... this is their reply to my query.

Dear Ben

Permenant boost is obrtained by holding the switch up for two seconds when in boost mode.

4 LED upgrade available at £90 includes us fiiting it and postage back to you.

You will need a XPE/ XPG optic as ours is designed for XRE.

We should be changing and have available XPG upgrades soonis maybe two months.

Love the lights the spares but they're aways just a fraction behind where the technology is. XPG should be in something that pricey and new NOW. I've had XRE's in their housings for 18 months.

I agree mikey, although they use generic cutter kit so is dead easy to mod them. I'm looking at adding XPG`s myself, soon as i fix the switch i broke when i dropped it fiddling, damn it!!!

shorts_in_winter - I'm about to do this too. I am just waiting delivery of the new XPGs on a PCB ordered from cutter. Also new optics to suit the XPGs are in the same order.

I actually rang Lumi and had a long chat with them on the phone. They weren't up for telling me how to dismantle it, and whilst I don't blame them, you'd think they just tell. They will offer a retro upgrade by the sounds of thing, just not yet.

Worth keeping this thread up to date with a how to guide.

I didn't think that anyone made an optic for the XPG yet, just XPE ones that sit differently over the LED dome & focus the beam wrongly giving a halo artifact to the beam.

OK, so I just braved the dismantling job, and I have to say thankyou Mr Lumicycle. It is a simple case of just pulling the PCB with the LEDs on out of the lamp body. It is just held in place by to push fit electrical contacts once the lens is removed. I used a pair of circlip pliers to grip the PCB via the holes that locate the lens.

I guess I have just rather publically voided my warranty, but judging by what I can see it is typical A1 build quality by Lumi so hopefully no worries on that score.

As my light is one of the first it doesn't have the push fit plug of the newer ones, just a couple of wires.

In the end the local (Australian) distributer for Lumicycle fitted the 4 XRE pcb for me, which has given a big boost to output. I may well still upgrade to XPG's later down the line but this will do for now.

How do the stock optics perfom Markyd? I have been told the lumi ones are bespoke, although they look a lot like the cutter ones.

Snaps.

After using Carlco optics with XP-E and XP-G I have to confess I haven't experienced the beam pattern you describe and the pics of my prototype light http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/bike-lightxp-gs-arrived-today don't detect any "halo". When using my prototype I get a good spill of light reaching far enough along the trail.

Furthermore I think you'll find that all those who have purchased a Trout light will tell you that the light works fine using a combination of Carlco optics and XP-G LEDs.

Just thought I'd mention it.

🙂

Markyd
Does that Lumicycle head unit have a seal under the lens clamp ring ?.

Yes trout & your light in the link above use individual optics, it was the triple & quads that people are getting odd beam patterns with.

Sorry I should have made it clearer, thats why I've not used XPGs in any MR11 can type conversions yet.
