We've no spare old style incandescent bulbs left, and the replacement low-wattage give a cold light, making home feel unwelcoming. The new ones are also slow to start, so no good for quick trips into a room for whatever purpose.
Are there any bulbs out there which deliver a good level of light? What's a good way of improving things?

You can still buy incandescent bulbs in various wattages, i've bought a good stock of them as i despise the flouro versions as they flicker at night when switched off and annoy the tits off me, and they give off a poor quality of light.

somafunk is correct...the RS type are still available for 'industrial use'.

Try a motor factors for lead-light bulbs.

I think Robert Dyas sell halogen bulbs hidden inside 240v bayonet bulbs...they are bright, fast-starting and reasonably efficient.

Or a carboot sale when they restart in the spring.

The low energy ones take a while to warm up but they should give a nice colour of light, you may have bought the wrong ones. You want "warm white". Philips and Osram are the best. LEDs are becoming a viable alternative, but as yet the light output is still a bit cold.
