Hi Oxboy

I'm one of the organisers of the event, so hopefully I can answer your questions. The Lemming is entering it's 14th year this year, and the idea is the same as it's been from the start; to make the South Downs Way as do-able as any ride whose start and finish points are 100 miles apart can be!

We lay on accommodation, luggage transport, food, return transport, route marking, support stations; the idea is that all you have to think about is the riding. Being a two day event with a central overnight stop makes it a good social event too.

Is it do-able for a group of raggedy pub bikers?

Depends how raggedy ๐Ÿ˜‰ It's the south downs way, so it's 100 miles in two days with 9,000 ft of climbing (don't underestimate the hills!). Having said that, we've had all sorts complete it over the years. You get plenty time to do it in and all the support you'll need and there is an 80 mile option that brings the day one distance down to 43 miles (rather than 63). Pace yourself and enjoy it and you should be fine. You've got all summer to put in some miles and get long days on the bike in preparation.

One tip; book early if you want hostel (rather than camping) spaces. Beds are limited and book up well in advance.

Hi Martin, Well it looks as though we are 'in' just getting the final numbers together, I'm certainly interested in the hostel option, I reckon I'm gonna need a nice comfy bed after 60 or 80 miles in the saddle!
You know you said there was 9,000 feet of climbing, does that mean theres 9,000 feet of descending too? I hope so ๐Ÿ˜‰

Nearly - we finish at Beachy Head, which is about 100m higher than the start at Winchester, so if I'm honest, you do get fractionally short changed in the descending department. There's still plenty though ๐Ÿ˜‰

Bike choice is a very personal thing but yes - go with whichever one you think will get you through some long days and big hills in the most comfort. It's really not a 'big hit' trail, but the cumulative effect of the whole journey might make you grateful of full suss.
