I have decided to ditch singlespeed on my 29er scandal and go for 1x9 or 1x10. The big question I need to know, is it worth getting a 10 speed transmission with a clutch??? I am sure it is better but is it worth the cost bearing in mind I allready have the 9 speed stuff except 1 shifter. If I were to go 9 speed would my chain be falling of my front ring as it the standard shimano xt middle ring. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated thanks in advance.
clutch, yes miles better than standard even with a front chain device
i'm running 1x9 non clutch with device on HT and 1x10 with clutch with device on FS, FS never drops chain and i throw it down gnarlier stuff than my HT
front ring would benefit from being unramped as your XT is designed to aid shifting so at extreme ends of gear choice it'll want to shift into the missing big/little chainring
29er?
Oh, FFS, get up to date, would you!

Hi, I run 1 x 9 on my Scandal. 32 x 11-34. XT rear mech, no clutch. Front ring is a 32t hope ring and I use a Superstar chain guide thing that fits as a BB spacer. No dropped chain yet on rocky Dartmoor bridleway descents at high speed. However have dropped the chain when slow / stationary and accidentally pedal backwards.
Top BB fit guide with a 9sp works for me. It would be quieter with 10sp clutch mech, but why not wear out our 9sp stuff first?
If you stick with 9 sp I've got a Deore shifter I could sell you...
Thanks for the replies. Wish they just made a 9 speed clutch rear mech. I will check out the superstar chain guide as I would rather use my 9 speed stuff.
I've set up a few 1x9 bikes with the Superstar chain devices. They work a treat.
I know this introduces a significant cost implication, but an Alfine 11 has a similar spread to 1x10, and I'm seriously considering going down that route in the interests of weatherproofing my next bike.
