I am after a new saddle and I was wondering, as I was advised by a doctor several years ago, if leather is still the best covering material.

Does anyone know the facts behind this? I am quite interested in a number of synthetically covered saddles (Fizik Gobi as one example) and it does give me more options to choose from, rather than the Selle Italia ones I normally look at.

leather top with a plastic underside is good for mountain bikes.
a brooks i find is not very good.
water splashing and mud from below WILL ruin the saddle no mater how well you dubbin it.

it breathes, you sweat less on it.

That's what I thought. Are any of the synthetic coverings available designed to have the same characteristics as leather? I have looked on the Fizik website and they don't say anything.

I still ride with a Brookes B17 if you treat it well, have a mudguard and poss a saddlebag underneath and clean it often (Proofide under and on top),my bikes live in the house! not in a cold shed, itll only ever truly fit you.
Enough of the Brookes advert.

surely if you're standing up as you do on a mountain bike and wearing decent shorts, the breathability of the saddle cover isn't going to be that much of an issue.

Onzadog has a point and by the time you've put on seven pairs of padded pants you'll barely feel the seat.
