I was wondering whether anyone had any success in fixing weeping seals on shimano disc brakes. I know the answer is normally that you're stuffed and you have to get a new caliper as shimano don't supply spare seals and you can't get the from anyone else because they're a peculiar shape but I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has managed to fix one.

Mine have been weeping for ages and contaminating brake pads like nobody's business.

If it's leaking from the transfer port O-ring then you may be able to get one from another (mineral fluid compatible) brake manufacturer, piston seals are unlikely though.

It's the piston seal unfortunately. Leaks onto the back of the brake pad and soaks through to the pad material. Queue squealy squealy brakes that don't actually stop you. Grr.

New caliper then I think, it's theoretically possible to get the seals but nobody ever seems to manage it. The silver lining is that compatability's pretty good, I bought a cheap SLX caliper and plundered the bits out of it for my XT, and it turned out not much more expensive than buying new pistons and seals for most brakes. Oh, and it came with pads too.

Thought about buying a new SLX from CRC for buttons but couldn't bring myself to break the "look" of my bike. Managed to get a new caliper for 45 quid from shiny bikes. Bargain.
