Morning....

I am in the market for a new bike. Ideally I would like a 650b full sus, not got on with the 29er ones I have tested. So do I go for a bike from the lbs, one of the canyons or get a frame and spend some time building one. If I do go for the build it'll likely be one of the yeti frames from crc as they are silly cheep atm (yes thats going back to 26er but I dont overly mind)
What are your thoughts?
cheers

I saw girthvader deano is selling his spicy, why not that? Yeah I know, Green! *shudders*

Of course off the peg you always get better spec than self build for your money but canyon returns if any problems arise seem problematic from many posts on here. New frame and build would overall be best though as you end up with a bike you really want. Do you have many parts you can transfer making it cheaper or do you have a mate with a Canyon you could get your leg over for a go?

I was tempted with a canyon 650b, outstanding spec for the £, but impatience kicked in due to the long wait for delivery so went to LBS and bought an off the peg bike.
First time I've done this for quite some time as I usually build from scratch.

I think you should decide what you want first and see if that exists, if so buy it as a full bike, if not build it yourself.

You win some you lose some, I had a bad experience with my last complete bike via mail order. So since then I've either built myself or would buy from a local LBS if they had a good deal (pretty rare though unless you happen to live near one of the big guys who do end of season discounts like Trends, Cycles-UK, Bikescene etc.

I quite fancy a Canyon as they're speced largely how I'd like them (I like shimano and ritchey components). At the end of the day life's too short to ride bikes you don't like, and the odds of getting a lemon are small, so buy the one you want and accept that there's always a chance things could go wrong.

getting my canyon spectral al (650b) in about 3-4 weeks. just the base model but it's still a good bit of kit. was going to get it for my birthday in november this year but seemed better to buy early and get the use straight away 🙂

canyon are good kit for the money but its the thing of buy from internet and deal with long distance support or buy from lbs and have a person you can speak to face to face if something goes wrong.

how much you looking to spend out of interest?

Or work into budget cost of removing (& selling) and replacing any parts on an off the peg bike do get the spec. you want. Still may be cheaper than a build from scratch?

The problem is, even at trade or heavy discount you struggle to build a bike with the same spec as the Canyon or YT bikes.

X01 groupset- £750
Brakes - £200
Fork - £600
Wheelset -£400.00
bar/stem/dropper/saddle/ tyres - £500

= £2450, No frame included, you can get the whole Canyon / YT for that...

Depends on your priorities really.

Price - Canyon/ze Germans
Touchy feely customer experience, getting test rides and good support - LBS.
Money no object/getting exactly what you want - build your own.

Personally I favour a combination of options 2 and 3

Right then.... what I want is a light, shortish trave, good at xc miles, good at going down fs bike. I have tested the solo c, pyga 120, scott spark920 and genius 920 and 720 and a giant antham. Will be testing the scott spark 700 series as soon as I can get one as well as the trek remedy. Both of these are almost identical to the canyons. After sales on the canyon doesn't bother me that much as its uk office is only down the road and I could camp in the door step if there was any hassle.. all of the above bikes had their strengths and weaknesses. Budget is a top wack of 2.5k......

From what you've said, i'd be throwing my money at canyon... (unless you want it now)

Hey DV, apologies for not getting in touch over the Xmas break. I was ill!

So, if you'd like a look over the PYGA. Gimme a shout, let's hook up. I try not to use it in winter, lucky me has a winter HT for the gloop but am sure we can sort something. PM in profile.

EDIT: Just read your budget and TBH, you'll struggle with the PYGA, unless you're planning or have bits to put on the frame. Cheers

Hi Slackalice, no worries, its been hell on toast here and I suspect not much better for you. I know id strugle to build a pyga for that but a rolling chassis isnt out of the question. Then itd be a case of transfering all my stuff from the chameleon. And saving for the rest... plus the pyga 120 seemed a bit short in the tt for me, as did the sc solo
nickdavies that's probably the way forward, but I cant discount the spectral al either.
it has to be good around my local loops (hampshire) and great at the trail center's, like swinley, afan and bpw (really want to learn to jump too). guess its a keep on trying...

Do you actually want a canyon? Or are you sucked in by 'look at the kit you get'?.

NBITF.... possibly a bit of both. Like the look and they are around 700 to a grand cheaper than the equivalent spek trek/scott.
