What are the latest shimano XTR 9 speed shifters i thought it was the Shimano XTR M970 but everywhere says these are discontinued?
Both statements are likely to be correct.
High-end stuff will all be 10-speed now.

Indeed they are, the last (as in most recent [i]and [/i]final) are M970s, and they are shown as discontinued on the Madison website. 10 speed herein.
I really struggled early last year to find some 9-spd XTR shifters, and in the end actually paid more than I'd have done for 10-spd ones.
And I've a new XT 9-spd mech sat next to me just now (thanks Postie), as little choice in XTR - as in too much difference now that few are discounting XTR vs XT.
Rose had some cheapo Saint 9speed shifters a couple weeks back. Might still be there
