I am looking at building a new wheelset soon and am looking for some inexpensive hubs, After a look around I have seen the latest Shimano XT hubs come in at a very reasonable price and also the Superstar Switch EVO

I am aware that they are cup and come and therefore will require a tad more servicing than others out there, however in terms of general reliability etc how are they getting on? I see they mention a new micro gearing freewheel, does this mean higher engagement points than thier previous hubs?

On the other hand we also have the Superstar Switch Evo hubs, these do have lots of nice interchangable axle parts which would help if I ever changed frames etc and sealed bearings, however I have heard that the bearings aren't neccesarily the best and also that they can have issues with the freehub bodies?

What would your thoughts be on these two options?

Thanks

Adam

Have had a similar dilemma myself, I replaced on XT rear with a switch evo, and it was great that I could swap the axle to a 10mm bolt thru. Not so great that the alu freehub has cracked/died and will cost me £25 for a steel replacement. I'd say that if you know what axle size you want and it's not going to change too soon, then go for XT. I did this on the front, and the new XT is lovely, and decently light too. Seems very well built and I think will last very well.
