[#1742732]

Just removed the XT cranks off my Spicy to find that the granny ring has been rubbing round the BB. They were removed to make way for a set of Race Face Deus with a double set up and bash but when fitting them with a 22t and 36t the 22t fouls the frame and will not let the cranks rotate. The granny on the oem cranks has obviously been worn down.

I removed the new granny ring and fit an old one which I filed significantly. The cranks now rotate but the frame has been gouged out by the ring, by cranks which came on the bike as standard. Anyone else had a similar issue or am I missing something?

Also, with them having a bolt on front mech and running a 22t 36t set up the chain fouls on the front mech bolt on bolts unless set up bang on. Again, anyone else had these issues?

Lapierres site shows nothing with regards to technical details which is annoying!

dont know about lapierre's but it sounds like a spacer to move the cranks out a bit is missing, id ring a dealer and ask if they have one fitted as standard
someone on here must have one to have a look

Zesty owner here (514) but as far as i know Spicys/Zestys have the same BB's and in our case XT cranks. Mine don't show any sign of rubbing at all.

In regards to running a 36/22 set-up, i was wondering whether or not there was enough adjustment on the direct mount mech to be able to run a 36 middle ring. Only just it would seem!

Sorry, none of the above really helps you!

EDIT: Let me run to shed to check re: spacer.

Well, the tabs on my granny ring (where the chain ring bolts are) has a small flat machined onto it to clear the BB shell. I assume thats a modification Shimano do for Lapierre.

Regarding a 36 tooth middle ring, i can't see how/why it would be fouling anything. From what you're suggesting, your chainline isn't right perhaps?

My gf's 2008 Zesty did this from new. First ride was a gritty one so we didn't realise the grinding noise was the granny taking off the excess paint around the BB shell...we mentioned it to the dealer but didn't bother pushing for a replacement or anything as it didn't seem too serious and had sorted itself out.

What year spicy is it?

The 2008 spicys had a fatter bb shell (press fir not screw on so ignore spacer comments) and some cranks with pointy bits around the bolts on the inner diamaeter of the granny ring (i.e XT) had contact with the shell.

you can file a little bit off the granny ring and should be OK

2009 models has a step down in the BB shell to avoid any contact with the granny ring.

Yep, my Zesty had a slight step-down in the BB shell as well as flats filed on the granny ring mounting bolt tabs.
