After struggling to get my hands on a zesty and having to wait until may to get the one I want I thought of the orange five, should I wait for the zesty or go down the five route?

Think about it. Something French or something made in Alifax?

That's exactly what I was thinking, you just seem to get a lot more for your money with the lapierre and am I right in thinking there would be a fair weight difference?

You should probably find that out!! Just seen a carbon spicey that was very nice and light, tubeless out the box. The alloy was OK. There are demo bikes around so you should probably try and ride them both....

There will be a big difference in suspension action obviously, what was your last bike?

why not buy a bike based on what you want, rather than what people who dont exist tell you to buy?

All bikes are good.Jsut buy the one you like the look of the most, it probably wont make any differance.

For your first full sus I recommend getting out and trying everything you can. The first one will normally feel great but may be crap in comparison to 2/3/4 of the demo.

Blag a go on your mates bikes, see what demos are going on - Bike Treks do loads if your up that way, Skyline at Afan and lots of others - make a weekend of it. Have a look at the dealer sites and see where they are taking them.

Most shops will organise a demo bike from the importer (normally knocking the cost off what you buy in the end)

Before jumping in to my first full sus I tried 8 bikes to make sure.

Totally, totally depends on what you ride and how you ride!

If you want a tough, simple, robust bike, that tackles the lumpy stuff well, get a 5.

If you like to cycle up as well as down, like to go proper fast on flowing single track, and don't maybe mind doing a bit more maintaince on your bike, get a Zesty.

I have a 714, but it doesn't mean i don't steal a subtle admiring glance in the direction of a nicely spec'd 5 on odd occasions.......... 😉

I just finished re-building a s/h 2010 zesty 514 - my first full sus. Had a bit of a trip round the block. Gorgeous. Surprisingly light and nimble feel (and I've just come off a 9kg hardtail). I ain't goin back. It's like riding ur best reclining chair down the road. Mmmmm bootiful!

From what I've heard, you'd be better with a Five than the unreliable (warranty failures)bike from the land of cheese and white cloth, then again you'd also equally do well to consider the Covert recommended in the other thread.

I normally point out the differing cost of suspension pivot replacement, and difference in gently curving gear cables versus something that a boy scout has practiced tying knots with if customers can't decide 🙂

I'd buy a Five if I could. (To accompany my 29er ht).
Can't believe how they hold their value so well.

Lapierres look a bit fussy, & a tad flimsy.
They do look good on top of an Audi in the car park though.

Lapierres will look dated next year and you well be upset when there massively reduced in winter, save yourself the upset.

Can't agree strongly enough re trying before you buy. Coming from a steel hardtail you may well be shocked at how different f/s feels - and it's not all good!
I've owned 3 f/s and have ended up back with my (old) Superlight as it feels closest to my steel h/t (which I sold recently but only cos my back needs protection 🙁 ).

Your arms, your legs, your mind. Try as much as you can. Long live the single pivot. 😉

I was undecided between a Zesty 314 for £2300 and a Five Pro for £2800, the Five being out of my budget ended up being the deciding factor for me.

12 months later I am still loving my Zesty and i certainly don't regret keeping within my budget.

May really isn't very far away

A mates brother has just bought a 514 and Five Pro to share between himself, his wife and his 2 lads (they're all a similar height fortunately.

I think he was preferring the Five so far.

Get the budget Mojo for the price of a half decent specced 5.

Just thought I throw that into the mix 😛

I bought a '5' 18 months ago an sold it about 12 months ago (lost about £900) - shocking waste of money - it just felt like the wife, dead and unresponsive underneath me. My ride now is fast, agile and like to be thrown about (like when I first met my wife)

Must try an orange before purchase, you may hate it like I did

I tried both. The Orange 5 I demo'd was great when the trail was pointing down, fun to pop over jumps and drops and felt really solid. It was let down by some very wooden Hope brakes. IMO it didn't climb as well as the Zesty, but an adjustable front fork would sort that out.

I the end I went for a Zesty as I live somewhere flattish and it seemed more swayed to XC than the Orange. I also stayed away from the carbon rear end. I found a used 2011 314 on this forum for £1350, bargain. Changed the brakes, wheels, fork and rear shock to stuff I had on a donor bike and preffered.

Both bikes are very, very good, your budget and the type of riding you do day to day should be the deciding factor.

Specialized Camber 29er seems to do everything as well as if not better than a longer travel bike, check out Dirt Magazines review. Wish I had more cash 🙁

Lapierres ride nice.

Orange will probably last longer and cause you less grief
