I have a young lady (9) who is wanting to do a longish bike ride for charity. She's always wanting to do charity stuff.
As she has only recently learned to ride a bike I thought a canal stretch would be good.
I only know the tow path around the Morecambe area which is well surfaced ,but what about the rest?
I'm thinking about all of it. Kendal down to Preston.
What do you think?
It's OK in Kendal but its poorly surfaced south of Kendal and the M6 chops it in half. Gets better around Carnforth.
I've read that just south of Kendal that it's not a great surface but we'll both be on mountain bikes. Is there a culvert or bridge for the likes of the M6?
I have only gone as far down as Forton. Like you say, the bit around Carnforth/Morecambe is either tarmac or well graded gravel - as soon as you get to Deep Cutting Bridge (south Lancaster) it is more of a muddy track with water running off the surrounding fields making it quite soft in places (even in summer). I have managed to get my 5yr old and 8 year old kids to do 10 miles along the canal with no problems.
Thanks. I think I'll have to check the route first. Maybe with a stop over at a nice inn because forty odd miles is far too much in one day. ๐
Preston Wheel is 22 miles long and mainly off road though it is not flat there is only one big climb.
I have toyed with the idea but it is not surfacer so is just grass. personally I think it will be slow going
Went from Preston to garstang once to watch the rugby, came back along the A6. Apart from a small section after owd nells (bilsborrow) it was all or largely unsurfaced until Garstang itself. Have also done from garstang to Galgate before but was with an old girlfriend and had to abandon it at winmarleigh as it was unsurfaced, and with long grass pretty hard going even in the dry.
There's a decent cycle path from glasson dock that runs right up to crook o'lune that I used to do with my dad as an out and back, nice and flat gravel surface along an old railway line. Me and a few mates did a short pub crawl route last year using that, between Lancaster to glasson dock, then the canal to Galgate, and then through the university back to Lancaster. Was quite a nice little loop that was largely only on quiet roads or paths. But could just as easily stick to the canal from Galgate back to Lancaster.
Edit: just re-read the op and seen you want a bit of a challenge, none of my routes probably count haha
