[#7970307]

While the long haired boss is away this weekend ive a full free pass Saturday (Sunday is tied up in the Peak district )

My idea is to either head from Stavley up Garburn and push left to High st and loop round and down Nan beild , OR

High st from Hartsop and loop around Ullswater ,

Any advise or route ideas welcome and will I die ?

Your first option is more exciting, the second more boggy. I'd do the High St/Ill Bell/Nan Beild loop.

High Street from Hartsop will be a bog fest.

High Street from Hartsop will be a bog fest.

If you enjoy hike-a-biking up and then pushing your bike downhill through a bog, this is the route to choose. 'Death bog slog' sums it up from last summer.
Nan Beild is the way to go.

It was lovely when I did it in May ๐Ÿ™‚

Cheers everyone so far ,. I take it you can cut left from the Garnburn pass to High st , as ive never done that before , ive always done Nan Beild from Sangill up over Harter fell and down to Kentmere

This is a really good loop. Apart from the hike a bike bits from the gate on Buck Crag and on Yoke,Ill Bell and the last bit up to Thornthwaite Beacon its all rideable. We found the second path across from the Beacon more fun and less boggy. You have to head North away from the Beacon, through the stone wall on the main track and its about 1km up on the right on the otherside of a wall (porb set it as a waypoint so you don't miss it). This is proper fun all the way to the shelter on the NB with a couple of techy bits to slow you up, but defo all rideable without dabs. For added Gnarr, drop left from the shelter down to Small Water, this is a tricky one but much more rideable than you would think, hike a bike back up, rest in the shelter for snacks, then descend the NB South and onto Kentmere.

Enjoy ๐Ÿ™‚

I prefer the Ill Bell, Froswick and Yoke Ridge as a Downhill to be honest. The run from Yoke all the way down to Kentmere is ace.

Maybe consider, Stavely, Sadgill, Summit Gatescarth, over Harter Fell to Nan Bield, then Mardale Ill Bell, onto Thornithwaite beacon and down the ridge.

Apart from the switchbacks at the top, I happen to think Nan Beild to Kentmere is over rated.

TBH ive never been a massive fan of Nan Beild , it just ties in nicely ,i much prefer the run to Sandgill and down Gatesgarth ,its more to add another peak in , this helped me http://www.walkingenglishman.com/lakes39.html .

TBH if the weathers anything like it is in Saddleworth atm when i come off the M6 at 9am i will drive to keswick and do a Borrowdale loop

In which case, given that it's actually been relatively dry, I think you'll enjoy your second option more.

Great photos Simon! I think you were fortunate with the day you got but on a good day and provided you don't expect loads of gnarcore the normal High Street descent can be pretty nice.

If you do end up riding from Keswick a good ride is from Braithwaite over to Whiteless Pike. That's a really nice descent and not mega gnarly. It's also rock rather than bog so more of a "guaranteed success" than High Street.

Last October (the week before The Flood) me and my lad rode High Street from Pooley Bridge with the descent down Nan Bield. It was a great day out though I think to enjoy the descent from Mardale Ill Bell to the top of the pass you have to be in the top centile (I'm not!). We did get picked up in Kentmere however..

Stevedoc both of those routes are fine i much prefer the Garburn up past Dubbs as it is all rideable. The Lakes up top are quite dry so either but Ullswater lake shore will be very busy!

The guy says he prefers Gatesgarth, so in good STW fashion someone recommends Whiteside edge eh?, nice one good to see continuity.

PS. i did nan bield a week ago, which was ace as usual, below the switch backs was very wet by the way.

Cheers all again, I did Whiteless pike from Braithwaite 7 weeks ago and tbh didn't enjoy it that much I stand by the bash as one of my faves and the feeling I have at the moment in true Stw... Is to go with my feelings and add Catbells.. As with everything though that could all change on the M6 northbound ๐Ÿ™‚

Fergal, you seem to chime up every time I post about a good ride in the Lakes. I didn't suggest Whiteside, the only descent off there I've tries was Grizedale Pike way and that's definitely not going to be the OP's cup of tea.

What's wrong with suggesting Whiteless? If he finds Nan Build too hard and Likes Gatesgarth it's a relatively easy route somewhere in between in terms of difficulty.

Personally I'd like to try and save everyone from a day out wasted riding Gatesgarth but I don't think your brand of treating people who suggest half decent routes in the Lakes are willy waving chumps is helpful. Let people ride stuff and make up their own minds about how difficult or easy or enjoyable or frustrating a trail is, just as the OP did with Whiteless.

Munrobiker and Fergal , thanks both for your imput on routes in the lakes , I did welcome any route info and suggestions for all. But really no need for anything else ,just seems to me people are so easy to get there knickers in a twist over the slightest thing on here , play nice as its only a bit of fun at the end of the day

I ended up doing Borrowdale again with a run over catbells down the non footpath side , was a good day out with a few cheeky vids as well.
