If you were going for a few days of day-long, from-the-doorstep-rides in the Lake District, where would you make your basecamp?

And why?

Somewhere around Ambleside or Hawkshead would be good imo - fairly easy to get to Kentmere/High Street/Grizedale/Claife/Walna Scar Road/Iron Keld/Loughrigg

Keswick, gives you borrowdale & skiddaw for 2 days of riding, both long days with the options of a ride out towards Helvellyn too. Run over Fleetworth Pike and do some Buttermere stuff too. If the weather turns crap there is always Whinlatter and if it's really crap the pencil factory

We spent a week in Hawkshead and did 4 or 5 rides without using the van to cart the bikes around.
