Just booked a few nights in Bourg St Maurice and have read that La Varda is a must ride trail in that area. Can anyone give me directions to find it?
Other tips appreciated too, but I dont need any details of guiding companies thanks, going it alone this time.
If i remember correctly you go to the top of the lift system on the trasarc (col de la chal). Go over the back of the top and the trail wraps round to the right around the back of the aiguille grive peak and follows the valley down. It pretty tech in places (ie hard to ride but do-able), long but overall worth it.
I hated it as a ride, great views though.

Whats not to like?
Too tech for me.
loverly, cheers
damn, we dont get to go for another 3 months! That looks very nice indeed, Querty, will it be hard to find?
Just p1ssed myself at Qwerty! ๐
the second of half of it is technical with massive exposure (i.e. 100 foot drop 6 inches to your left\right)
not the sort of trail to find any flow on, but a huge challenge non the less
Some of our lot who I'd consider pretty good riders echoed the comments above, incredible views but not as much fun as other stuff in the area. Quite exposed in places and a bit trialsy/stop start sometimes. I think it was seen by the TA lot as their most difficult route, that you'd normally do on the last day.
I had an off on it and the guide said to me "dont crash here cause you could die"
Have fun though
Drop me an email and I'll give you some (vague) hints... ๐
As above, it's pretty full-on, but the most technical sections are not the most exposed sections so death is generally not TOO imminent...
Qwerty's pic is the flowy bit before the carnage starts...
This is without a doubt my most favorite trail I've ridden in my mountain biking life so fare, and I've rode some good ones.
LONG, TECHNICAL, GREAT VIEWS AND If you clean it all the smile on your face is painful. Good job there is a nice bar at the bottom to chill you out.

When we rode it no-one cleaned it all, including the TA guides (although they have done before).

I've never seen anyone clean it either. I can do most of it, but there's a couple of the rock steps/switchbacks in the last section which are pretty ridiculous. Chatted with Pat from TA about it and he still has one or two sections he needs to clean too. Maybe I need to GTFU?
Awesome. Not very descriptive but everyone else has done that. But it's awesome.
I've ridden it once and it's an awesome trail, but by the end I was more exhausted mentally than I was physically. Concentrating for that long just messed with my head.
I enjoyed the faster/more flowing back country trails and Black/White 8 much more than La Varda.
Rode it 2 years ago, i had one stop, 2 of the lads cleaned it...TA guide seemed amazed!
Its a very good trail if you can ride that sort of stuff, although not sure i would want to ride it everyday!
