For the externally routed KS posts, the little housing where the cable clamps on has a plastic cap and rubber seal - parts 32+34 in the diagram below
...and over the years they've been no end of trouble. The cap doesn't stay on very well, I lost mine once, £15 for a new rectangle of plastic! But bought it and moved on, at the time. Since losing the first cap I have generally had a couple turns of insulation tape over it, though you have to be careful not to go too tight or the post won't operate. Tape isn't perfect as it tends to come unstuck over time, though. Cable ties don't work, if you do them tight enough to stay put will also stop the post working; elastic likewise.
Anyway more recently the seal has broken, let's see, £5 for a little rubber band...
I'm wondering if anyone has success with a ghetto alternative to the seal, or indeed to both cap and seal, for example just covering the cap (or the housing, bereft of cap) with the right kind of sticky tape?
I'd try a bead of silicone sealant, and zip-tie it on until it's set, possibly make a couple of notches in it to retain a zip-tie that's not pulled fully tight as a belt and braces thing.
I have a KS cap in my spares somewhere, I also bought a bag of orings to go around the seal groove. I kept mine in place with an extra o-ring over the top.
It's more secure if...
A - the hook goes under, rather than on top of the barrel and...
B - the ferrel that sits on the end if the cable housing has a tang on it that locates into the red cap. Early ones were plastic but there is a metal alternative.
For others trying to replace the seal I found an o-ring size 16mm internal diameter to be right. I ordered 1mm cross section though it's a bit on the thin side - for the next person to try this, 1.5mm or maybe even more may be preferable. You can get 5 o-rings on ebay for under £2.
