[#8288581]

Hi,

I am wanting to move my Krampus to XT M8000 1x11 (11-50 with OneUp Shark).

Unfortunately, it looks like Surly's chainring is too fat for the chain. The Surly OD cranks use a weird 5 bolt config that I can't find a 94BCD, 11sp, 30t chainring for anywhere.

Sooo, thinking of putting some normal 1x cranks on... but I presume Surly must have a reason for using OD cranks... I presumed if I use standard cranks, I would get tyre rub on the chain in the big cog... but then there seems to be photos of Krampuses with non Surly cranks.

I'm confused! Any experience?!

Thanks!

OD cranks are offset so that the double chainrings are running in the chainring positions of the big and middle ring of a triple, whereas a normal 2x MTB chainset has slightly narrower chainline. On my 29+ I run an old 10 speed XT 2x chainset with single NW ring in the outer position. You could also fit a Raceface Aeffect crankset.

I've never had any issues with running normal cranks with a ring in the middle position.
I've had Shimano (square taper and HTII), Race face and Truvativ cranks on there. All with no problems.
AFAIK the Surly cranks are used so that the front derailleur doesn't hit the rear wheel. Without a FD in place you'll be fine.

od chainsets are used so that the chain does not rub on the +size rear tyre.

Then it's obviously a solution to a non-existent problem, as on my Krampus I've never had a chain rub on the tyre!

Great, thanks for the info. Sounds like it should work then.

@Ton... I think I am going to borrow the M8000's off my dad's bike when I am next home... see if they work... might be up for that if they seem to work ok... will let you know!

Chris
